Baroque is a dominant artistic style between the Mannerist and Rococo eras, characterized by dynamic movement, overt emotion, and self -confident rhetoric. Baroque art produces intense responses from its viewers and is known to often combine several different media within a single work of art.

  After Maderno died in 1629 he was succeeded by Bernini as Vatican achitect. His training involved sketching the Vatican collection of ancient sculpture, including Laocoon and His Sons and the Farnese Hercules. Bernini was a Classicist who admired antique art. He is remember today for taking us into a new Baroque style.

• Artemisia Gentileschi
  1593 to 1652

  Gentileschi had a reputation that helped to spread the Caravaggesque style beyond Rome. She first studied and worked for her father, Orazio. She moved to Rome in 1616 and worked for the grand duke of Tuscany and elected into the Florentine Academy of Design where her work continued to blossom.

  Pope Sixtus V began the renewal of Rome by linking major pilgrimage churches with each other and to the main gates of Rome by creating avenues through the city.

• Michelangelo Merisi "Caravaggio"
  1571 to 1610

  Caravaggio brought the specialization of still-life painting with him when he came to Rome from Milan. He first started with studio work as a specialist painter of fruit and vegetables. He painted still life painting but was incorporated half-length figures with them also. He painted for a small circle associated with Cardinal del Monte where he was invited to reside. His painting began to center around religion, reintroducing realism into art and developed new, dramatic lighting effects.

  Carlo Maderno was chosen by Pope Paul V Borghese to give St. Peter's Basilica a longer nave and a new facade. Construction on the church began in 1607 and was complete by 1615, not including the facade bell towers.
