I ran across a blog post today - http://education.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=1027485%3ATopic%3A24039 that describes NBC’s News Archives on Demand through hotchalk.com. This appears to be another great resource for videos for educational use. The blog link will provide more detailed information and the appropriate links to sign up.

Stay tuned for lots more video and a ton of photos! We’ll have it all up here soon! For now, enjoy NASA’s YouTube video of the event (part 1). You won’t see the kids, but can hear them.

Our downlink on June 26th, with the International Space Station was a galactic success. Astronaut Greg Chamitoff entertained the students and audience as he answered 10 of the 20 planned questions. Due to a 9.4 second delay in the video signal reaching us from the International Space Station, it took much longer than hoped to answer each question. Our downlink was covered by several news media including Channels 4, 8, and 11, radio station KRLD, the Star Telegram, the Burleson Star, the Burleson-Crowley Connection and students from Burleson High School and Hughes Middle School broadcast journalism Using Region XI Education Service Center as the bridge, we broadcast the downlink to students and educators around the world to Honk Kong, Chihuahua, Mexico, New York City and numerous schools in Texas. The service center recorded our broadcast and the video will be available here in a few days, so check back soon.
If you attended our day of science and technology and did not take the survey already, please take it now. There are only 7 questions, so it only takes a couple of minutes and it will help us evaluate our efforts. Thank you in advance.

On April 22nd Burleson ISD received an exciting email from NASA that started with these words, “Congratulations! The Teaching From Space Office at the Johnson Space Center would like to officially notify you that your proposal was selected for a live-in-flight education downlink for Expedition 17 on the International Space Station.”
We hope you will join us on June 26, 2008 at Burleson High School for this historic event. The downlink is currently scheduled in a window from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and we are planning a big day that includes science demonstrations, a question and answer time with a NASA specialist, robotics competions and much more. Come and experience it all from 9:30-2:00, June 26, 2008.
http://www.burlesonisd.net/it/wordpress/?page_id=28

We are at 2 days and counting until the live, in-flight downlink with astronaut Greg Chamitoff aboard the International Space Station. Come join us in the Burleson High School auditorium for a free, public event as 20 of our students interview astronaut Greg Chamitoff as he orbits the Earth aboard the International Space Station. The downlink will occur from 10:50am until 11:15 am.
To celebrate this historical event, for which Burleson ISD was chosen as one of only 5 downlink sites GLOBALLY, BISD will be hosting a day of science and technology fun for the whole community. From 9:30am until 2:00pm, students, families, community members, and space explorers of all ages can enjoy robotics competitions, meterorite displays from the Monnig Meterorite Museum at TCU, and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History’s mobile science labs and the portable planetarium all free of charge! Visitors can add their name onto a microchip that will orbit the moon on a special satellite, view and learn about high powered telescopes, watch videos about NASA and the MISSION BISD:ALL SYSTEMS GO summer camp, and wander through educational displays about the International Space Station, Expedition 17, and our astronaut, Greg Chamitoff.
Summer church groups, clubs and organizations, daycares and summer camps are all welcome to attend. If you would like to volunteer for the event, or just need more information, please contact Sandra Hines at (817) 245-1000 or via email at IT@burlesonisd.net.

The Mission BISD: All Systems Go summer science and technology camp, a week long look at science and technology with a NASA theme, ended in the stars on Friday, June 13, 2008 as students visited the portable planetarium provided by the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. Throughout the week students also got to experience geocaching, robotics, data probes and hand-held microscopes, student response systems, digital photostories, lab experiments, and much more. Apangea, a sponsor of the camp gifted each student with a summer license to use their math tutorial program, and the 457th Fighter Squadron from Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth sent pilot Lt. Chris Bachelor to meet the students and talk about the science and technology of flight. Students spent the week exploring, learning, and having fun. Several students from camp have been selected, along with non-camp students, to ask questions of NASA astronaut Greg Chamitoff during the live, in-flight downlink with the International Space Station on June 26, 2008 at 10:55am. Response from students, staff, and parents regarding the camp has been very positive and we hope to repeat the event again next year. We would like to formally thank all of our sponsors for their support and donations. And a special thank you goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Lori Rich, Candace Rich, and the team of videographers, photographers, and audio crew from Hughes Middle School for covering the camp events.

This year, instead of small monthly TUT Award prizes, Instructional Technology is giving larger technology awards to semester winners. Each teacher who is nominated during either the fall or spring semester has their name entered in the drawing. The number of times a teacher’s name is entered corresponds witht the number of nominations that teacher received during the semester. One name is drawn and that teacher is our Semester TUT Award Winner!
The Fall 2007 Semester TUT Award Winner is…
Delani Lemons

Delani recieved a document camera, a SMART Technologies Airliner interactive tablet, and an Epson Projector.

This was the one website I was able to get down from the closing speaker http://torres21.typepad.com/flickschool/ It amazed me how many different teachers had figured out that they had to make the subject appealing to the students. These teachers chose to use pod-casting, broadcasting, windows movies, etc. to make their subject interesting. One school started making posters of students stories who scored a 4 on their practice writing. Then that student was allowed to make an audio pod cast of the story. Once that was done, they let the student make a windows movie, using still pictures the students took with a small digital camera, about their story. The school posted the podcast and then the movie on the school website. They said that after about the 3rd or 4th story that was made into a movie, students who had never wanted to write started revising and revising until they got the necessary 4 on their paper to be allowed to do this.

I went to several broadcast workshops where they were using quick clips to help students with TAKS. This website has more than just the broadcast notes. http://www.pasadenaisd.org/tcea/
You can also use Photo Story 3 to make videos from still pictures and the students love it! There was a school that used the incentive of making a Photo Story 3 movie out of the students work (they had to score a 4 to do this) that raised their TAKS writing scores. They actually had students that had never wanted to learn about revising doing a ton of revising just to get to make a movie out of their story.

Including the Instructional Technology staff, 22 BISD teachers recently joined over 8000 other Texas teachers in attending the TCEA (Texas Computer Educator Association) conference in Austin. They were joined by teachers from the BHS Business Department and Technology leaders. Dedicated teachers rushed from session to session in an effort to learn all they could about integrating technology into their curriculum. Doni Bracht did a fabulous job of teaching a podcasting to a large group of teachers from across Texas. IT is inviting our teachers to record their experiences and share links to resources about what they learned this past week at TCEA. They might even tell you about the things they won!
