Woot! I'm in Longview tonight, recovering from the KILLER cook out provided by the awesome gang from White Oak ISD! STEAK! CHICKEN! And Mike, the veggies were to DIE FOR! Fabulous! You guys really do know how to do it up right!
So...I'm presenting tomorrow at the Area 7 TCEA Conference...and hoping to win the iPad they've been advertising as a door prize! Please send all good mojo my way! LOL.
I'm presenting three sessions...Paperless Classrooms, Moodle and Elluminate for Professional Development, and Cellphones in the Classroom. Wish me luck. I will also be demonstration my TOTAL GEEK DOMINATION and win the title of BIGGEST GEEK by wearing my Personal Soundtrack Shirt from Thinkgeek.com. (love those little monkeys at Thinkgeek!). I will try to get a friend to video me using it so you can see what it is and what it does and why it will ensure my total domination in the "Who's the biggest GEEK" category. LOL!
So...gotta go load up my shirt for tomorrow! Wish me luck! I'll catch you up tomorrow night!
I know I'm a bit behind....but would love opinions on jailbreaking my iphone...should I...shouldn't I? Is it worth it? #

For my EDLD 5368 Instructional Design class, one of many I'm taking through Lamar University for my Educational Technology Leadership Masters' degree, I had to build an online class in Schoology.com. As a final assignment for the course, I'm required to post here to my blog and respond to some prompts provided by the instructor. So...here we go....
Knowing how to design and implement EFFECTIVE online learning is vital for educators. The movement towards hybrid and online classes is in full swing in both k-12 and post-secondary institutions. We cannot claim to be preparing students for college if we don't introduce them to this format. And with the emphasis on differentiated instruction, teaching to the needs of the students, and providing individualized instruction, online learning becomes a useful tool to achieve those goals. This venue also allows for extension of the classroom beyond the walls of the school and beyond the scheduled class hours during the day. Teachers can provide students with communication and collaboration tools, resources, and activities that will enhance student learning with 24/7 access.
The course I created is a hybrid class for training on eInstruction CPSPulse Classroom Response Systems. I will probably recreate the hybrid course in our Moodle installation and use it to help teachers get trained on eInstruction Classroom Performance Systems. I may include a bit more help for teachers and some videos/recorded help sessions to better explain the software for them. I will not use the Schoology system as my district has it's own Moodle installation and I like the total customization I can get with that software.
As a staff developer, I have been integrating online learning into our district's professional development for over a year. Our district is embracing the concept of webinars and online courses using our Moodle installations. I also train teachers how to use Moodle to provide hybrid and online courses for their students.
I really had to think about whether or not I had any questions about online learning after this course. I don't really have a question so much as a statement. If we're going to move teachers and professional development into the virtual realm, we are going to HAVE to train our teachers on best practices for online learning. Moving a lecture driven course into a virtual environment doesn't improve the class - in fact it just points out the lack of interactivity and student engagement. We have to rethink content delivery and demonstration of mastery to really take advantage of the digital tools available in the online environment (collaboration, multimedia, interactivity, etc.). There's nothing worse that taking an online class that was just a tired, boring classroom course moved online. We need to teach teacher HOW to teach online - not just how to use the software to teach online.
"Well-developed online courses are are teacher-led, with extensive interaction between teachers and students, and often between students. Because the teachers are so closely involved, students find that it is not easy to cheat in an online course. Given that online courses are so interactive, and that full-time programs provide opportunities for students to interact in person, online students are not isolated, but instead can focus on learning and socializing at different times." (Watson, 2007)
What will I do with this new learning that I've acquired? Keep working on providing relevant, effective professional development for my district and help teachers provide interactive, academically rigorous, multimedia driven courses.

#bisdf amp;f taking notes on a folded square - take one flap then share and fill out other flaps as a group. #
#bisdf amp;F focus lesson establish purpose of the lesson and we model our own thinking #
#bisdf amp;F don't cofuse interrogating with focus lesson - here's what I think , what do you think, any questions? That's interrogating #
#bisdf amp;f lesson objective is for teacher planning, lesson purpose is for kids #
#bisdf amp;f in focus lesson teacher is doing almost all the work. This should be grade level - not below grade level. #
#bisdf amp;f not a lot of differentiation in the focus lesson (it's the teacher doing the work) #
#bisdf amp;F guided instructions is questions, prompts, and cues to get the learner to do more of the work #
#bisdf amp;f focus lesson - i do it....guided instruction - we do it - the point of guided instruction is to support/scaffold the learner #
#bisdf amp;f guided instruction sets kids up to take more control of their learning and application #
#bisdf amp;f whole class guided instruction has to be pretty quick and pretty accurate or you lose kids - indivual helping loses other kids #
#bisdf amp;f Collaborative learning (not cooperative - no accountabitlity in cooperative) also called productive group work #
#bisdf amp;f productive group work is individual accountablility and group interaction #
#bisdf amp;f example of ESL students if u want them to understand English - they need 2 TALK more. They get little opps for using academic eng. #
#bisdf amp;f doing worksheet packets is assigning work - there is no teaching involved. You deserve para pay if u are supervising not teaching. #
#bisdf amp;f fischer discussing the concept of merit pay - TEACHERS shouldn't worry - supervisors should. #
#bisdf amp;f seat work, worksheets - called 'em "Shut Up Sheets" - classic. #
#bisdf amp;f we keep kids busy to buy ourselves guided instruction time #
#bisdf amp;f - how long can a 2nd grader independently read or write? But we ask them to do that for big blocks of time to buy ourselves time #
#bisdf amp;f dissing the ask 3 before me technique of guided instruction blow off. #
#bisdf amp;f what's missing in guided instr. -need consolidation-as humans we need interaction 2 learn. we consolidate in presence of others. #
#bisdf amp;f use questions to choose independent reading books (i.e. what's worth dying for) and then teachers choose 1 book whole class - R&J #
#bisdf amp;f discussing teaching example video as a group - dissection via group discussion #
#bisdf amp;f good group discussion - examples from teacher classrooms, etc. #
#bisdf amp;f modeling is so important - think aloud so the kids see a model of thinking - relevancy for kids - purpose #
#bisdf amp;f independent work can be the next day-etc. independent tasks can occur before they're ready for the independent work #
#bisdf amp;f school wide/district wide implementation builds habits so your kids already know what to do because they work the process daily #
#bisdf amp;f what habits does your school build? Good or bad? #
#bisdf amp;f kids learn what they need to do in a class on DAY 1 - and you must practice and remind and establish those procedues and processes. #
#bisdf amp;f it always seems to come back to Harry Wong's First Days of School - processes and procedures. #
#bisdf amp;f chart for effective organization of instructional time that compares ed guru theories of thought. Cool. #
#bisdf amp;f moving into details on establishing purpose. Doing another graphic organizer - I am apparently folding and cutting challenged. #
#bisdf amp;f Establish purpose -focuses attention, alerts learners 2 key ideas, prevents "birdwalking" & maximizes learning time #
#bisdf amp;f establish purpose - can be used in formative assessment #
#bisdf amp;f establishing purpose - types - content goal (based on standards) #
#bisdf amp;f establishing purpose - type - language goals (vocab, language structure, language function) #
#bisdf amp;f establishing purpose - type - socal goal (classroom need for school priorities -ie. listen to each other, share, work together) #
#bisdf amp;f giving content area examples of this process in the 4 core. #
Graphic organizer 1 from #bisdf amp;f http://twitpic.com/1bz27a #
@k20 LOL...It's hard to keep it to 140!!! in reply to k20 #
Graphic organizer 2 from #bisdf amp;f http://twitpic.com/1bz2qp #
#bisdf amp;f watching teacher video of kids practicing communication skills - "Lines of communication" two lines of kids who talk to each other #
@k20 I noticed the lack of technology too...sigh. in reply to k20 #
#bisdf amp;f @k20 old school thought - old school processes...how long will this fly with NEW SCHOOL kids? #
I'm afraid #richallen has spoiled me for presentations now...sigh. #
#bisdf amp;f gradual release of control - from guided instruction to student collaborative listening and working. #
#bisdf amp;f guided instruction is not about the shape of your table - it's about scaffolding of learning you create. (elem teachers laughed) #
Graphic organizer portfolio pic from #bisdf amp;f& http://twitpic.com/1bzbye #
#bisdf amp;f modeling-humans mimic or imitate, need examples of the type of thinking required, facilitates the use of academic language #
#bisdf amp;f modeling comprehension - inference, summarize, predict, clarify, question, visualize, monitor, synthesize, evaluate, connect #
#bisdf amp;f modeling - word solving - context clues, word parts (suffix, prefix, root, base, cognates),resources (others, internet, dictionary) #
3 hours into presentation on teaching & 1st reference 2 technology is the word internert - as a resource when you don't know what a word is. #
#bisdf amp;f - don't model things you don't want kids to over-generalization #
#bisdf amp;f modeling-using text structure - informational- problem/solution, compare/contrast, sequence, cause/effect, description #
#bisdf amp;f using text structure-narrative - story grammar (plot, setting, character), dialogue, literary devices #
#bisdf amp;f text features-headings, captios, illustrations, charts, graphs, bold words, TOC, glossary, index, tables, margin notes, italics #
#bisdf amp;f book word wise & content rich #
#bisdf amp;f love that the teacher modeling a think aloud in his class texts a friend to get a definition of something he doesn't understand! #
@ewanmcintosh it may be to some - to others of us..it's exciting to think about the possibilities for learning. in reply to ewanmcintosh #
#bisdf amp;f texting teacher brought up technology conversation at our table #
#bisdf amp;f we cannot block/condemn technology we have to assimilate it into our culture and turn it to our purpose. #
#bisdf amp;f technology is a tool - not a teacher. #
#bisdf amp;f teachers should USE technology as another weapon in their learning arsenol - for themselves AND their students #
#bisdf amp;f students DESERVE and example of your thinking and thought processes during the instruction - they need to know how you do it #
#bisdf amp;f what you model must be interesting enough for students to suspend disbelief as you as them to try on new behaviors/strategies #
#bisdf amp;f nice lunch provided - people collaborating during lunch #
#bisdf amp;f talking about learning walks to gather evidence of implementation - 50 people (teachers, admin, curric, etc.) go on a walkthough #
#bisdf amp;f when you ask what are you doing - teachers set tasks as their purpose. When you ask what are you learning - they focus on learning. #
#bisdf amp;f addressing administrators - if you and the teacher have a different definition of quality - the teacher is immune to feedback. #
#bisdf amp;f - agree on a set definition of quality so that conversations are productive...we've heard it over and over - are we implementing? #
#bisdf amp;f - administrators' first job is to help campus define quality (consensus on quality) - so when feedback is given - it's relevant #
#bisdf amp;f these definitions continually improve and change to meet campus needs/levels/improvement #
#bisdf amp;f defnitions must be group-formed or there is no ownership or buy-in and it is NOT a one year process. #
#bisdf amp;f - 50% of inst time must be students interacting w/ each other. This is reflective of workplace! #
#bisdf amp;f reminder that there is no one-size fits all solution for kids - not in the classroom, not with technology, not from a consultant #
#bisdf amp;f "I don't know how you're going to learn this, but it's on the test." #
#bisdf amp;f background knowledge is crucial to reading...if you don't understand something - find something on the topic on your reading level #
#bisdf amp;f ie - if you're studying the brain and can't understand the college text - get some background with a HS text (example given) #
#bisdf amp;f go to non-traditional resources for background knowledge - youtube, pbs/history channel/discovery - etc. #
#bisdf amp;f you can't learn from books you can't read #
#bisdf amp;f but...you CAN learn. #
#bisdf amp;f reading widely builds background and vocabulary #
#bisdf amp;f interacting with others keeps students motivated and clarifies information and extends understanding. #
#bisdf amp;f i have choices and rely on strategies #
#bisdf amp;f when the learning environment is so hard that you can't see success in that environment - it's okay to quit. #
#bisdf amp;f do not stay in a toxic environment. As adults we know this. But are our classrooms toxic for our kids? R we making it okay to quit? #
#bisdf amp;f we have to make school supportive enough (but challenging enough) to make the kids feel that they can be successful. #
#bisdf amp;f don't brag about how many kids fail your tests - that's a reflection on YOU - not your kids. Rigorous is not synonymous with good. #
#bisdf amp;f brlliant people can be bad teachers (isn't reflection on your worth - but your gifting or ability bank - it's just not there.) #
#bisdf amp;f if we are preparing kids for college we have to introduce them to online learning in a SUPPORTED environment. #
#bisdf amp;f brings up the concept that kids are online USERS but we have to teach them to be online LEARNERS. #
#bisdf amp;f bad teaching in a classroom translates to bad teaching online. The same concepts for best practices apply online. #
#bisdf amp;f on fluency and comprehension - we have to worry about getting to meaning - fluency is important but not the only part #
#bisdf amp;f I can read quickly (fluency) and have NO IDEA what I've read. I've decoded...not understood. #
#bisdf amp;f @k20 I agree with you - so we've got 2 figure them out quickly...learn frm those who have done it successfully. Make it a priority. #
#bisdf amp;f we focus on engagement but we use behavior as r only evidence - it's a fallacy - u can be checked out but look engaged & vice versa #
#bisdf amp;f you can't use the physical as your only evidence of cognitive (engagement) #
@k20 I want to do the same with 9th grade english - let's do it and help each other! in reply to k20 #
#bisdf amp;f - engagement - students are captivated - we shouldn't be looking for that - the KIDS need to be active, interactive, collaborative #
#bisdf amp;f the idea is to create tasks that are both engaging and interactive? #
#bisdf amp;f while watching video put vocab words from film in order then retell the content 2 a friend using the word list to help u. (example) #
#bisdf amp;f - instead of counting behavioral engagement...count interaction opportunities. #
#bisdf amp;f what does it take to make a task both engaging and interactive? #
#bisdf amp;f 1. sufficient background knowledge to have something to say #
#bisdf amp;f 2. language support to know how to say it. #
#bisdf f topic of interest #
#bisdf amp;f 3. topic of interest. #
#bisdf amp;f 4. an authentic reason to interact. #
#bisdf amp;f 5. expectation of interaction #
#bisdf amp;f 6. accountability for interaction #
#bisdef amp;f established community of learners that encourage and support each other. #
#bisdf amp;f 8. understanding of the task. #
#bisdf amp;f 9. knowledge of the norms of interaction. #
#bisdf amp;f moving to productive group work. #
mamaestes: #bisdf&f ie=your transitions are improving but I'm still seeing spelling errors....now kid has to find the errors.
mamaestes: I get really depressed listening to teachers sometimes. Sigh.
#txdla 195 moderating in Houston We Have A Process #
#txdla 195 encouraging all in this session to use the session hash tags so presenter can get feedback on session #
#txdla had fun at the social last night...Txdla-ers are some wild and crazy, lazer-taggin', moonwalking people! Woot to the 10th power! #
#txdla 195 SFA University materials are found at oit.sfasu.edu #
#txdla 195 roadmap for development and delivery of an onoline course (found on oit.sfasu.edu) #
#txdla 195 the process helps teachers who want to build an online course to determine if online courses are right for them, what type, etc. #
#txdla 195 the roadmap doesn't keep teachers from doing what they want but you must be a certified online instructor to be compensated #
#txdla 195 too keep online courses from being added willy nilly, you must go through tech to get the online section number you need #
#txdla 195 SFA has a quality assurance process that courses/instructors must go through to be classified as online courses & get a section # #
@Beth_Case too cute! in reply to Beth_Case #
#txdla 195 courses must be asynchronous (primarily), preservable, and licensable. #
#txdla 195 live elluminate sessions are'nt considered preservable/licensable? u can record them and use the recording - doesn't that count? #
#txdla 195 SFA says get departmental approval before moving into online learning. #
#txdla 195 "I didn't know there was going to be a quiz" lol..too funny #
#txdla 195 once you have dept. approval, call the distance ed coordinator. (SFA process for creating online courses). then complete training #
#txdla 195 training required to be certified online instructor at SFA-fundamental instr tech skills, blackboard, web-course design community #
#txdla 195 fundamental inst tech skill sets - file management, basic web nav, intro to blackboard, just the basics. #
#txdla 195 if you already have a skill set and can demonstrate it, you can skip that workshop. Makes it faster for those who have skills. #
#txdla 195 used to do basic webpage skills at the beginning but people forgot it by the time they needed it later. #
#txdla 195 offer the beginning training both face-to-face and online. #
#txdla 195 training for skill sets is offered in sequence every semester, but you can go at your own pace if you want. #
#txdla 195 - web design community is the last training you have to take. learn pedagogy and course design at the same time - all online #
#txdla 195 you teach in the way you were taught, so final online training is done online to help teachers learn in that environment #
#txdla 195 teacher are given a design template, learn instructional design, practice online pedagogy, connect w/mentor, and cover copyright #
#txdla 195 focus is not on technology but good lesson design. #
#txdla 195 direct link to SFA roadmap website - http://bit.ly/cxEC0b #
#txdla 195 really like the SFA roadmap website as it walks teachers thru the process. could use this in r district 2 help them get started. #
#txdla I still have 19 google wave invites to share...if you need one, you can DM me. #
#txdla 195 the roadmap is a guide for teachers, but they receive support all along the way. #
#txdla 195 when profs get certified they have a mini graduation, get diplomas, walk to pomp & circumstance, etc. - good 2 recognize the work #
#txdla 195 certified online instructors get compensation from the fees charged 2 students (comes out to about .15 cents per hour) - not much #
#txdla 195 when you're ready to design your course you must schedule a design plan meeting with OIT and your dept head. #
#txdla 195 lots of ideas could be adapted to the K-12 - a set process to help maintain high standards in training, development & instruction #
#txdla 195 intellectual property categories so you decide what compensation and rights retention will be in place. #
#txdla 195 cat1=no intellect property or owned by other that SFA or SFA employee - no stipend. #
#txdla 195 oops - that last was a category 0 #
#txdla 195 cat1=developer no compensation but retains all rights. #
#txdla 195 cat2=developer gets compensation and shares usage rights. #
#txdla 195 cat3=developer receives compensation but retains no rights (work for hire) #
#txdla 195 as K-12 we need 2 look @ this issue when we create online, this is a good process 2 get it out in the open in a systematic way. #
#txdla 195 last step is to partner with OIT to complete the course (so you get support and can complete the course). #
#txdla 195 - SFA has a final review to approve course work. lots of prep work - but I'm sure it saves headaches later with poor courses! #
#txdla 195 course check off sheet is on the website - looks good...nice checklist to see what is included. #

#txdla 182 talking about Snyder vs. Millersville U- student teacher susp for "drunken pirate" picture - and univ denied her teaching cert. #
#txdla 182 running animated slide of headlines of reprecussion of social media (firings, arrests, etc.) #
