Jack Kirby would have been 92 today. The giant of American comic books, or perhaps as Tom Spurgeon says, its mighty heart, it’s impossible for me to imagine where I’d be today without his influence. Probably not making comics.

FREAKANGELS VOL 3 TPB
Retail Price: $19.99 US
Cover: Paul Duffield
Writer: Warren Ellis
Art: Paul Duffield
Readership: MR
Format: Full Color, 144 pages, TPB
ISBN – 1592910785
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Volume Three of award-winning author Warren Ellis’ ongoing web comic, FREAKANGELS, is here! This installment collects the entire third arc of the post-apocalyptic saga into 144 gorgeous, full-color pages. Twenty-three years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment. Six years later, the world ended. Today, eleven strange 23-year-olds are living in and defending Whitechapel, maybe the last real settlement in flooded London. They’ve made a new friend, and together they successfully defended their home from raiders–but the post-apocalyptic drowned London that the eleven Freakangels survive in is never a safe place, and never surrounded by friends. In FREAKANGELS: VOLUME THREE, the FreakAngels begin to address how to build their community while a serial killer stalks in their midst. Everything almost comes crashing down around them as one of their own breaks their most valued rule. Ellis’ ongoing story of a flooded London is beautifully illustrated in jaw-dropping detail by Paul Duffield, and every page is as much a work of art as it is a compelling and multi-layered story. This third collection is also available as a Hardcover edition with an all-new cover by series artist Paul Duffield that is limited to just 2000 copies, and a Dual Signed Hardcover edition, limited to only 1000 copies, signed by both Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield!

Bruce Castle Presents: Do You Like Your Zombies Mild Or Etreme? - Spoilers! « read/RANT! - These characters are very different from your traditional zombies. Do zombie tales contain bodies crashing down on Earth from a flying plane? Nope. What about zombies talking, planning, and eating each other? Didn’t think so. Again, this book will challenge you. There is another moment in here that will stop you for a moment before you can continue.

Whitechapel - GRAVEL and Wolfer tackle THE MAJOR SEVEN - Avatar has done a bit of juggling of artist schedules, so there's a small change to be made to the credits in the solicitation text for upcoming issues of GRAVEL. Unfortunately, we're losing Oscar Jiminez as the series artist, as he moves on to another HUGE project, to be announced shortly. I was thrilled with every page and every panel of Oscar's 5-issue run on GRAVEL and his unique style infused the series with an unsurpassed realism.
So what does all this mean?
That's right, beginning with GRAVEL #8 and the new story arc titled, "The Major Seven," I'll be back illustrating interiors! I can't tell you how thrilled I am to once again be drawing the guts of the book (no pun intended). I'll still be co-scripting with Warren, and I'm currently working my ass off to do my best to live up to the reputation of my artistic predecessor. Warren's got some fucking awesome twists coming up, so grab your section of the Sigsand Manuscript and hold on tight. "The Minor Seven" was only a warm-up.

People I Want to Work With: Mike Wolfer - the prophet king governance - I don’t have characters I want to write, I have people I want to work with.
Mike Wolfer, along with Los Bros. Hernandez and Eastman/ Laird, is a big part of what is wrong with me.
Most of my early Wolfer stuff was tossed by The Mother. I keep meaning to hunt down replacements.
I read his Daikazu shortly after it came out. I was seven. But it was mad fun. Giant monsters and Wolfer’s arguably deranged mind… it was awesome. Fucking forget Cloverleaf. Actually, don’t, it was pretty good. Just realize an American did an amazing take on giant monsters YEARS before.
Then came Widow. Which is one of many reasons I can’t take Spiderman seriously.
Crossed #1 by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows - Within a few pages, you get a great feel for the charaters and where they fall within the heirarchy of the group and although there is mystery surrounding the cause of this disaster you understand the severity of it. The art is handled by Jacen Burrows in fantastic fashion and he really get's to show us what he's made of with possibly one of the most horrific splash pages I have ever seen.
http://www.avatarpress.com/2008/11/30/bookmarks-for-november-30th-2008/

http://www.avatarpress.com/2008/11/26/bookmarks-for-november-26th-2008/
Comic Book Resources > Reviews: Aetheric Mechanics - The solutions to the explicit and implicit mysteries are the same and very quite ingenious on Ellis’s part as the revelation both exposes the utter lack of depth in Raker and pushes him to grow beyond himself. “Aetheric Mechanics” may seem simple on the surface, but it is one of the best things Ellis has written in recent years, mixing a sentimentality not often seen with his obsession with emerging technology to a wonderful effect. He and Pagliarani create a world that is intricate, detailed, and not easily dismissed.
http://www.avatarpress.com/2008/11/19/bookmarks-for-november-19th-2008/
Whitechapel - GRAVEL #5: The Furious Host - Mike Wolfer: GRAVEL #6 is an important issue for William Gravel, the penultimate chapter of the MINOR SEVEN story arc. In the past, Gravel has found himself in some very interesting scenarios, but nothing like this… And the decision he will make with regard to the tempting offer placed before him could change the course of the series (and his entire life). Big things are on the way, folks!
http://www.avatarpress.com/2008/11/11/bookmarks-for-november-11th-2008/
The New Straits Times Online — Black Summer - Black Summer engages you intellectually and emotionally while at the same time operates with an adrenaline charged pace that never lets up on the suspense and thrills. This is perfect entertainment. A beautifully realised piece of work and I can't wait to get into this creative team's follow-up work, No Hero.
Military Analysis: 303 - [Mark's note: commentary on the Garth Ennis / Jacen Burrows graphic novel 303 from someone familiar with the history and use of the .303 Lee-Enfield bolt-action rifle. Interesting background reading for those who have read the graphic novel.]

Reviews@Comic Related: Gravel #5 - It’s a Warren Ellis book, so you know it’s good. Then again, it’s an Avatar Press book and that might be what makes it so good too.
Cosmic Comix & Toys : Aetheric, Crossed reviews - Avatar is amazing at picking up these lesser known artists of impressive quality and letting them bring their books to life. Pagliarani Pencils a fantastic tale with Dreier inking, making the characters real, giving us amazing scenes of technologies that shouldn’t exist, taking us through Ellis’ mad that is executed with interesting and amusing resolve. It’s a beautiful book in design, format, story, and with it’s illustrations.

Crossed #0 - Capsule Review « Weekly Comic Book Review.com - Having read Ennis’ offerings on Preacher, The Boys, and The Punisher, I thought I’d be prepared with what was to come my way. Boy, was I wrong.
Comic Book Review: Review - Crossed (Avatar) - Told from the perspective of a young man seemingly content to drift through life, the text is sharp, concise and knows when to drop a startling, sickening observation on the madness that ensues. Anna Mercury #1 (of 5) Review - Line of Fire Reviews - Comics Bulletin - "Like all of Ellis' other Avatar work, this book is entirely unique, bringing an exciting new vision to the page, unlike any of his other stories. There are clear allusions to pulp action characters like The Shadow…"
The Watchtower Podcast » Archive » The Starting Gun - Anna Mercury #1 - "A secret agent with hair as big Ellis’ body of work, this buxom redhead is a bit of an urban legend in her world, but that just makes her that much cooler. As a female lead character, Anna is a breath of fresh air."

BREAKDOWNS EXTRA — WARREN ELLIS SHOWS HIS “SCARS” - "It's been percolating a few years, I guess. Talking with policemen about the hard edges of their jobs, amassing a library of crime reference, a feeling that I should write something that genuinely made me feel uncomfortable…"
Horror, Please… But Hold the Sorcery (Warren Ellis and Scars) | Indignant Online - "Underneath the physical horror, add a layer of psychological horror. The titular “Scars” are emotional ones. In the bleak world of the homicide detective, the horrors that that occur as an everyday part of the job accumulate and change people. "
