Reported missing after being released from jail (were arrested after investigating the burning of a black church in Lawndale MS, supposedly charge was connected to speeding)
The first wave of recruits consisted of about 200 volunteers that left the week-long orientation session at Oxford, Ohio (Western College for Women) where there were apx. 800 students in preparation to eventually set out.
SNCC's goal in forming Miss. Freedom Democratic Party= "to challenge the hegemony of MS's regular Democratic party, which in practice excluded blacks from membership. (2, 232)
Was a mock election to parallel the gubernatiorial race in MS.
Project 2 goals- 1- demonstrate to MS whites and fed govt that blacks were indeed interested in voting.
2- To provide practice in casting the ballot to ppl denied the right all their lives.
Civ rts groups in MS. banded together to form Council of Federated Organizations
--goals: unite voter registration and other civil rights activities in the state and oversee the distribution of funds from the Voter Education Project.
1961-1968
Under the auspices of the non-profit Southern Regional Council (SRC), the Voter Education Project (VEP) is established by civil rts associatons: NAACP, CORE, SCLC, and SNCC to receive monetary aid from kennedy administration and disperse it to the organizations to focus on voter registration .
