• Election of 1860
  Nov 10, 1860

  Abraham Lincoln was elected president. The south thought that he would ban slavery, so they broke away.

• Raid on Harper's Ferry
  Oct 16, 1859

  John Brown and his men attacked the U.S. Federal Arsenal. He thought that by stealing weapons he could free slaves. He got slaves and abolitionists to battle against slave owners.

• Lincoln-Douglas Debates
  1858

  Formal political debates between Lincoln and Douglas. Douglas was for popular sovereignty and Lincoln was against slavery.

• Lecompton Constitution Rejection
  Nov 7, 1857

  It was created to allow Kansas to be a slave state. Pro slavery forces tried to push it through Congress for acceptance, but there was enough opposition that it was rejected, and Kansas became a free state.

• Attack on Charles Sumner
  Mar 11, 1857

  Brooks attacked Sumner with a cane because of his speech , where he made of of Brook's uncle.

• Dred Scott Decision
  Mar 6, 1857

  A slave sued for his freedom because he was in a free state. The Supreme Court did not allow him to have his freedom because they said he was the property of John Emerson. It made abolitionists mad.

• Bleeding Kansas
  Sep 29, 1856

  They voted for whether Kansas would have slavery. People from Missouri illegally voted and it made the anti-slave settlers mad.

• Kansas-Nebrasks Act
  May 30, 1854

  Kansas and Nebraska became territories. Slavery would be decided by popular sovereignty. It made the north and the south mad.

• Uncle Tom's Cabin
  Mar 20, 1852

  A book that told about a slave being beaten to death. It made readers view slavery differently and it made the south mad.

• Fugitive Slave Act
  Sep 18, 1850

  Allowed anyone to be arrested for being a runaway slave without proof. It wasn't fair to slaves and it made the north mad.
