Cartoon by Clay Bennett, Chattanooga Times Free Press, October 20, 2008 Analysis by Sarah Severson Issue- Obama is being called Robin Hood, because he is wealthy and helping the poor, and McCain is being called Sheriff of Nottingham because he is stopping Obama from helping the people Techniques and Descriptions- Analogy, Caricature, Allusions. Editorial Comment of Cartoonist- John McCain thinks that Obama is a socialist and compares Johns tax plans to “Socialist” programs.
Cartoon by Mike Lane, Baltimore, Maryland
Analysis by Student A.
ISSUE - As the Presidential Election enters its final week, most polls show John McCain behind Barack Obama in the general election. According to recent polls by CNN and Newsweek, respondents supported Obama's positions on nearly every issue, including the economy, health care, taxes, and the concept of change. McCain is still favored in areas involving the military and foreign policy.
TECHNIQUES –
SYMBOLISM – the elephant and term GOP symbolizes the Republican Party
ANALOGY – the presidential campaign is being compared to a boxing match, with John McCain being battered
SARCASM – the sarcastic remark about “hitting his fists with your face” is commenting on the Republican election strategy
COMMENT – The cartoonist is not only commenting that the McCain campaign is being beaten, but he is also making a comment about the failure of the Republican Party to develop a strategy to win the election.

Cartoon by Mike Keefe, The Denver post
Analysis by Jack C.
Issue- John McCain’s strategy for the presidential election is failing and as Election Day approaches he continues to hurt his chances. McCain continues to use people like Joe the Plumber to help his campaign in any way he can. McCain has been using Joe the Plumber to help his chances at presidency by pointing out Obama’s high taxing plans. According to CNN.com this plan is not helping McCain at all.
Techniques-
Analogy- McCain’s campaign results so far are being compared to the flushing of a toilet.
Sarcasm- McCain’s comment “Joe the Plumber! Just in time!” is sarcastic because it suggests McCain is completely depending on Joe to win the presidency.
Comment- The author of this cartoon clearly thinks that McCain is putting himself farther down on the polls and then even farther by using strategies such as Joe the Plumber.

Cartoon by: Steve Kelley, The New Orleans Times-Picayune. October 15th, 2008.
Analysis by: Gabby P.
Issue- McClain and Obama both pledged to make change, but neither of them can do it without mudslinging. This cartoon shows sarcasm by saying that they would make change by promising to run positive campaigns, when they really both are producing campaigns that get up in each others faces and rat on the other person. This just goes to show you how both of the candidates go low enough to mudsling most of the time just to make the other person look bad and now worthy of being president.
Techniques- Sarcasm/Satire, because the person is being sarcastic saying that they both promised to run positive campaigns when they both ran mudslinging campaigns- the exact opposite.
Comment- The comment of the editorial cartoonist is that both candidates are mudslingers that like to pick on each other and their weaknesses. The cartoonist is also saying how neither of them can run a campaign without ratting on the other person and bad things about each other.

By Nick Anderson, Houston Chronicle Analysis by Henry Schlenker ISSUE – Sara Plain doesn’t have any qualifications for vice president. And she spent 150,000 dollars on clothes in three months., while she was trying to connect with the average American. TECHNIQUES- Symbolism- the empty coat rack symbolizes that she has no qualifications Analogy- Comparison between how much she spent on cloths and the qualifications she has. Comment- They are not only saying that she has no qualifications they are saying that she spent 150,00 dollars on cloths.

In a Presidential Debate, presidential nominee John McCain referred to Barack Obama as "That one." In the cartoon, McCain is again calling Obama "That one", but with a different spelling; instead, he is calling Obama "That Won" while reading the paper with a headline "Town Hall Debate". He is saying that Obama won the debate. It is an allusion to what McCain called Obama in that debate. If you do not know what happened at the debate, you wouldn't understand this cartoon. Also, both of the pictures of Obama and McCain are caricatures because they are both distorted pictures of the two candidates; Obama has big ears, a thin head, and a long nose. McCain has big cheeks, no upper lip, big smile lines, and thick eyebrows.

ISSUE- This picture is showing two parents who had just registed their kids to vote. The Acorn group are a group of people who are regeristed to vote, but the thing is not every person who is registered are real.(A.K.A their making fake people.) Since they favor the democratic party, it makes it unfair to the other party. People who aren't real are voting, or registered to vote democratic. ANALIZYING- There are two types of drawing in the picture. The first one is Symbolism, the symbol in the picture is the Obama icon. (Sun white, ground red, sky blue.) Another symbol is the Acorn, this is the symbol of the group. I would also say there is some stereotypes. First one is how the man and women registed the kids which is against law. (Kids can't vote.)
Analysis by Tieg Gielow Issue: Whoever is elected president is going to have a nightmare trying to work out all the problems both inside and outside the country This comic is about the challenges the new president will face if elected. David Horsey says that the nightmares don’t end after Halloween. is saying that right now the U.S. has some serious issues both internally and diplomatically on dealings with Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan and internally with the wilting U.S. economy and the U.S. war debt Techniques: Symbolism- The grave stone with the U.S. economy engraved symbolizes the crash of the U.S. economy. Caricature- John McCain is caricaturized as a Southern republican red-neck with his cowboy garb, Barack Obama is caricaturized as a basketball player, most likely because he is half African American and also he was born in urban Chicago In my opinion I feel that David-Horsey’s comic pretty much sums up what the new president is going to have to deal with. Whoever is elected president is going to have a nightmare dealing with all the issues that need to be dealt with.
Cartoon by John Cole, Scranton, Pennsylvania Analysis by Kern K. ISSUE – As the Vice Presidential election looms, Biden and Palin will be judged. In their upcoming debate, people are comparing Biden to Palin. According to recent polls, Biden is ready to become a vice president compared to Palin. Sarah Palin isn’t favored in many issues because of her copious antics. TECHNIQUES – ANALOGY – Sarah Palin is being compared to a baby, with the training wheels box. REFERENCES- If you didn’t what training wheels were, you wouldn’t get this cartoon. COMMENT- The cartoonist is commenting that Sarah Palin isn’t ready to be vice president. It shows that McCain’s choice wasn’t wise.
Cartoon By Steve Breen, The San Diego Union- Tribune, 8-24-08
Analysis by Andrea R.
Issue- Since you can only nominate 1 candidate for each party, the Democratic Party is split. Half of the party is for Clinton and the other half is for Obama. They need to unite the party so that they can make a better decision. They think it will be as easy as just using super glue and string to combine them.
Techniques-
Symbolism- The donkey represents the whole Democratic Party
Stereotype- that half of the party is for Clinton and the other is for Obama
Exaggeration- the Democratic Party thinks that it will be very easy to combine the two parties
Comment- the comment of the editorial cartoonist is that the Democratic Party is separated. Almost half want to vote for obama and the other half want to vote for clinton. The cartoonist is saying that we should just combine them.

A cartoon by Gary Brookins, of Virginia.
Issue- This cartoon is dealing with Barack Obama's choice of strength toward foreign policies. Some people don't like his opinion of a weak foreign policy, and some are with it.
Techniques-
Symbolism- Having to the toy tank represent Foreign Policies.
Analogy- The toy tank represents that Obama's Foreign policies would be a joke.
Caricature- Obama's ears and face.
Satire- Making fun of Obama's Foreign Policies, and his choice for VP.
Comment- The cartoonist is making fun of the weakness of Obama's Foreign Policies, by comparing it to a toy tank.

Issue: The issue of the image is that during the primaries, Hilary Clinton had multiple attacks on Barrack Obama. Some of these attacks actually helped McCain in his campaign to the White House saying that McCain is a more acceptable candidate than Obama because only she and the Arizona senator have demonstrated their credentials to be commander in chief.
Techniques: Caricatures, Sarcasm, and Exaggeration.
Editorial Comment: Hilary wants to be Obama's running mate after remarks in the primaries that hurt Obama and helped helped John McCain. Now, there is no way Obama will choose her for his running mate.

Cartoon by Steve Sack, Minnesota, The Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Analysis by Nathan G.
ISSUE – Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton are still debating with each other, while McCain has already clinched the Republican nomination. Obama and Clinton are too busy with each other to debate against McCain. (March 2008)
TECHNIQUES –
Caricature- the cartoonist drew pictures of Obama and Hillary to emphasize their features
Analogy- the cartoonist compares Obama and Hillary fighting to kids in bumper cars
COMMENT – The cartoonist believes that Obama and Hillary fighting will only help John McCain. He thinks that John McCain has a much easier road ahead of him than Obama or Hillary do.

Cartoon by Gary Brookins, Virginia Analysis by Bill W. Issue- Techniques- Caricature- we have a caricature about Obama and Wright Allusions- you have to know who is Reverend Wright and Obama
Editorial Cartoon by Michael Ramirez published in Creator's News Syndicate Posted by Zack Schultz Issue-It was discovered that one of Obama's childhood mentors was a communist. This could be critical to our government, because if Obama was voted as president, he could possibly use communist tactics to do horrible things to our country. Techniques- Caraicature-Dude, look at Obama! He's got a freakishly messed up face! Analogy-Obama is being compared to Richard Marx, one of the founders of communism. (Look at the quote at the bottom of the page. It says "Obamarx.") Exaggeration-Come on. People are taking this way too seriously. If Obama has a communist influennce in his young life, what's the possibility that he's going to actually use that knowledge now? People are exaggerating this too much. Comment-This is pretty crazy. There's a small possibility that it could happen, but it's sort of "out of the blue." It came out of nowhere!
Cartoon by Jack Ohman, Portland, Oregon, The Portland Oregonian. Analysis by John G Issue: This cartoon says that many Republicans in the right wing are saying McCain is to left wing or liberal. An article on journalgazette.net from February first says some republicans would rather have a true conservative lose the election than have McCain be president. It also shows how in the Florida primary people that said they were “very conservative” went in favor of Mitt Romney 2-1 over McCain. Techniques: Symbolism The Right wing on the plane stands for republicans because they are known the right wing of the political spectrum. Analogy this cartoon compares a right wing of an actual plane to the rightwing of the political spectrum. Allusion if you were not aware that the right wing was what the republicans were called and some people claimed McCain was to liberal you would not understand the cartoon. Comment: the Cartoonist is saying McCain is not right wing enough.
