Mostly known for his work with research in the fields of phosphorescence, radar, isotope separation, and X-ray diffraction. Awarded Nobel Peace prize in 1963.
Based on the structures of amino acids and peptides and the planar nature of the peptide bond, Pauling, Robert Corey, and Herman Branson correctly proposed the alpha helix and beta sheet as the primary structural motifs in protein secondary structure.
Chargaff showed that deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), not amino acids in the cell, is the carrier of genetic information and also did experiments that had to do with lipids plant nucleotides, the metabolism of amino acids and inositol, and the enzymes that cause blood coagulation.
