The Gold Rush brought about 80,000 people to California through the California Trail. Their goal was to strike it rich but it proved harder than they imagined. Many hardships came along with their dreams. Only a small percentage of the 49rs found gold enough to make them rich.
Robert Stuart found a pass through the Rocky Mountains. It was flat enough for wagons to pass. This made it easier for the pioneers to move west with their families and belongings.
President Thomas Jefferson purchased for $15 million, the Louisiana Territory from France. This deal doubled the size of the United states. A total of about 830,000 sq.mi. from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains.
Pioneers began to move west before the end of the Revolution. No treaties for land had been signed yet. The Moved through an area called the Cumberland Gap.
