• California Gold Rush
  1849

  The Gold Rush brought about 80,000 people to California through the California Trail. Their goal was to strike it rich but it proved harder than they imagined. Many hardships came along with their dreams. Only a small percentage of the 49rs found gold enough to make them rich.

• Crossing the Rocky Mountains by Wagon
  1812

  Robert Stuart found a pass through the Rocky Mountains. It was flat enough for wagons to pass. This made it easier for the pioneers to move west with their families and belongings.

• Lewis and Clark Exploration of the Louisiana Territory
  1804 to 1806

  Lowis and Clark explored about 7,700 miles of the Louisiana Territory. The kept a record of the land and people they encountered.

• The Louisiana Purchase
  1803

  President Thomas Jefferson purchased for $15 million, the Louisiana Territory from France. This deal doubled the size of the United states. A total of about 830,000 sq.mi. from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains.

• The Treaty of Paris
  1783

  This Treaty ended the Revolutionary War. The United States gained land from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River.

• First Westward Movement
  1775

  Pioneers began to move west before the end of the Revolution. No treaties for land had been signed yet. The Moved through an area called the Cumberland Gap.
