The Drama Department's one act play "Heubner the Reluctant" took a surprise third place at district competition, second place at regionals, and second place at states.

The annual HHS one act "Heubner the Reluctant" went to the Virginia Theater Association conference where they competed against over fifty schools from throughout the state. They placed in the top 4, meaning they had to perform for the entire conference. In the end, HHS placed 3rd overall.

The school board changes its cellphone policy allowing students to use their electronic devices in the hallways, cafeteria, library, and when given permission by a teacher.

A freak earthquake in central Virginia shakes the east coast. The vibrations are felt in Harrisonburg and cause schools to close early.

The 2011-2012 school year begins. In addition to a new principal and vice principals, new security cameras were installed over the summer and more class options were created.

Tragedy strikes the HHS community when Junior Ricky Valencia dies in a car accident.
Valencia had been doing behind the wheel with gym teacher T.J. Butler and two other students. Valencia was completing the required interstate driving portion of behind the wheel when the car crashed with a milk truck. Students held vigil outside HHS.

The school year ended and with it came the retirement of many beloved HHS teachers such as football coach Tim Sarver.

It is announced that HHS will be operating on a year long schedule instead of semester, meaning classes would last an entire year instead of a semester. Student reactions were mixed.

Tracy Shaver is selected as the new HHS principal. He was formerly the principal of Manassas Park High School.

The HHS Newsstreak, the Yearbook, and Broadcasting all went down to the annual Southern Interscholastic Press Association (SIPA) conference in Colombia, South Carolina. There, students from HHS won various awards and honorable metions.

Through the International Leaders in Education Program and the efforts of James Madison University, teachers from all across the globe were able to visit the Harrisonburg City Public School system and teach for 6 weeks. HHS recieved teachers from Bangladesh, Morocco, Kenya, Egypt, and India.

The HHS academic team went to state competition in Williamsburg, VA. Members of the team, which was mostly seniors, went on to enroll at prestigious US colleges such as Stanford University, William and Mary, and American University

The HHS Drama Department's annual musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was performed. The play starred Junior Dorrall Price, Seniors Phillip Bannister and Isaac Roher, and Sophomores Maggie Siciliano and Nancy Carry Logan.
The HHS Forensics (public speaking) team wins the district competition with many of the speakers coming in first place.

For years, HHS students were forbidden from bringing their backpacks to class and had to find other ways to carry their books. The ban on book bags was overturned in February much to the relief of loaded down students

Irene Reynolds retires a semester early, ending her decade long tenure as HHS principal. Retired Texas administrator Perry Pope takes over as interim principal.

HHS senior and offensive tackle Landon Turner was selected for the US Army All American Bowl in San Antonio. The game was January 9.
