POLITICIANS from across the political spectrum today united in support of the campaign and backed calls for a government loan to support Jaguar Land Rover through the credit crunch.
They stressed that Jaguar Land Rover is a viable company with a bright future and this would not be a hand-out, bail-out or subsidy for an ailing company. Here are their views:
n SION SIMON (Lab, Erdington): “I have spoken with the chancellor personally and written to him, to ask that he provides this money for Jaguar Land Rover.

ONE issue above all others dominates the West Midlands economy in these early days of 2009.
That is the future of the historic Jaguar Land Rover company, its 16,000 direct employees and nearly 60,000 supply chain and car showroom jobs across the UK.
Today the Birmingham Mail launches a campaign to demand that the Government acts now to help safeguard this future.

JAGUAR Land Rover boss David Smith today called for an emergency Government loan to safeguard 75,000 UK jobs during a “once in a century crisis”.
The chief executive of the Tata-owned group backed calls for up to £1 billion to be pumped into the Midland company to fight the worst consumer spending downturn for decades.
Mr Smith warned that JLR – which supports around 15,000 jobs directly and 60,000 in the supply chain – was facing an “extraordinary state of affairs” which had slammed the brakes on sales and cash flow.

A COLLAPSE of Jaguar Land Rover would put around 75,000 jobs at risk and cost the British taxpayer up to £2 billion, a top Midland business expert warned today.
Professor David Bailey, director of Birmingham Business School, said the consequences of Government inaction over JLR would be “huge” as pressure grows for a New Year £1 billion state-sanctioned loan.
Backing recent calls by Warwick Manufacturing Group director Lord Bhattacharyya and CBI Director-General Richard Lambert for Government action over JLR, Professor Bailey said state intervention was “both necessary and right.”

PRESSURE was mounting last night for the Government to release cash to help beleaguered Merseyside car manufacture Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
Ministers had insisted the firm should look to Indian parent company Tata before asking for a taxpayer loan.

BOSSES at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) are warning they could be forced to axe thousands of jobs unless they secure emergency government aid.
The company is in talks with the Government over potential aid worth hundreds of millions of pounds to help see it through the credit crunch. Car sales have plunged over the past year, with luxury brands like JLR among the hardest hit.

CAR production slumped by a third last month as the motor industry was increasingly hit by the economic downturn, new figures showed today.
The number of cars built in factories in the UK was 97,604, down by 33% on November last year, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.

The plant, which employs more than 2,000 people, is scaling back work on its production lines from two shifts a day to one from mid-January as part of the company’s strategy to deal with the slump in car sales.
Instead of doing two shifts all workers on the production lines will now clock on at 7am.

IT IS no surprise Alistair Darling is keeping the strings of the Treasury’s purse tight shut when it comes to the car industry.
The Government has never been keen to bail out struggling manufacturers, as the case of MG Rover demonstrated when Longbridge was allowed to shut with the loss of thousands of jobs.

MINISTERS yesterday pledged to explore guaranteeing bank loans to crisis-hit car manufacturers in a bid to kick-start lending, after an emergency summit.
They pledged to “look at all options” in response to a plea for help from all the major vehicle makers and suppliers, including Jaguar Land Rover and Vauxhall. Key to an aid package requested by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders was a plea for the Government to underwrite lending, to encourage banks to loosen credit.
