James Chadwick

1931

Chadwick was a british physicist who demonstrated that the nucleus of that atom also contains a nuetral partical called the neutrons and has nearly the same mass as a proton.

Neils Bohr

1921

Helped increse our modern knowledge of the atom. Helped with the Manhattan project (the first atomic bomb).

Discovery of the Proton

1917

Rutherford in past expirements determines that inside the nucleus of the atom exist a proton that has a charge of +1.

Robert Millikin

1908

Robert Millikin was an American physicist who determined that the charge of an electron was -1 and the mass of an electron is 1/1840, the mass of a hydrogen atom.

Plum Pudding model of the Atom

1896

J.J. Thompson the discoverer of the electron states the theory of the atom that electrons are negetively charged "plums" in a positively charged "pudding". Therefore the atom was neutral.

Wilhelm Roentgen

1894

Discoverer of a mysteryious, powerful type of radiation called X-rays. These powerful rays of energy can pass through any materials. (The first medical x-ray machine was used in 1896.)

J.J Thompson

1878

Thompson was a British physicist who discovered that the "cathode rays" were really negatively charged particles , smaller than an atom, which he than named electrons.

William Crookes

1874

Crookes developed the ray tube, which was further named as "Crookes Tube" in which "rays" were discovered. When the tubes were connected and a voltage was used these "rays" could be seen flowing ac...

Ernest Rutherford

Dec 31, 1870

New Zealander who leaded the "gold foil experiment" disproved the plum pudding model of the atom but proved that the atom must have a small positively charged nucleus and the rest of the atom was m...

Marie Curie

Dec 31, 1866

A polish scientist who won two nobel prizes (one in physics and one in chemistry) and that is a record tht still stands today. She was the first to use the word "radiation" to describe the strange ...

John Dalton

Dec 31, 1765

John Dalton was a school teacher who developed the modern atomic theory by experimentation that all matter is made of atoms, atoms of a particular element are all the same size, mass and chemical p...

Lavoiser

Dec 31, 1742

Lavoiser is considered the "Father of modern chemistry" because he developed the Law of Conservation of Mass. Also he named Oxygen and Hydrogen, the metric system, an created the the first list of ...

Alchemists

699

The Alchemist were attempting to turn the pure elements into gold but never fully succeeded. However, Jabir ibn Hayyan helped establish experimental design in chemistry.

Atom Discovered

Dec 31, 459 to Dec 31, 369

Democritus was the first person to state the that matter was made up of tiny particles and recognized these particles could not be destroyed or split.

Aristotle's Theory

Dec 31, 383

Aristotle proposed matter was made from air, fire, water, or the Earth. He was proved wrong and it was found that Democritus was correct.
