Jake Cinninger plays drums with The Macpodz at the Magic Stick 2/5/2011
The Macpodz always blow it up good, but this past Saturday at the Magic Stick was something different. Umphrey's Mcgee was in town for a show at the Fillmore and Guitarist Jake Cinninger stopped by to sit in and decided to play some drums, and nailed it. Say whatever you want about the video, this is the first test of the Zoom Q3HD's live audio recording capabilities and I'm impressed.

Meeting Monumental Kitty.
A trip to Detroit to shoot the electronic music sensation Pretty Lights at the Fillmore allowed me the opportunity to visit one of the city's new landmarks, Monumental Kitty. Born from the masonry skills of 30-year Detroit native Jerome Ferretti, the Monumental Kitty project is an art installation funded by community donations through Kickstarter. The cat measures nine feet in diameter, and seven feet tall. A tail erupts from the ground behind it to the left, a claw is poised on the right. He is found on the corner of Cochrane street and an I-75 access road at the site of a pedestrian walkway that once ushered thousands of fans to the old Tiger Stadium. (Someone also added him to Foursquare.) It's apparent that with the removal of those tigers from the neighborhood, a new feline needed to take its place. An article in Model D suggests: Inspiration for the design came from architect Antoni Gaudi, Corktown's abundance of cats and the Detroit Lions and Tigers. Ferretti also references the mythical part-cat, part-human Sphinx that ate anyone that could not answer its riddles. "That's my relationship to Corktown," he jokes. It's inspiring to think that Monumental Kitty is here, and if the ravages of time or development don't tear it apart, a thousand years from now someone may come across it in the depths of a city built into the skies, watching silently in the darkness.
