I’ve been playing with the latest Iphone/Ipod Touch update for about a week and the full extent of the possibilities that come with the addition of the apps is just starting to hit me. A little history… Living in a rural area without any cell phone service, purchasing an Iphone just didn’t make any sense (although secretly I craved one anyways). I have happily been an Ipod Touch user since it first graced us with its presence. I have also avoided jailbreaking or customizing my Touch in any way as I waited patiently for Apple to bring us some app goodness.
In typical Apple fashion… They brought the goodness. Iphone 2.0 is the pinnacle of mobile technology. What started out as the greatest portable music player (I won’t mention the cell phone because I have little experience with it), has quickly became the option for mobile computing. Its mobile options are pretty limitless. Whether you’re looking for communication and networking on the go, more music options via online radio, games, or the quickest access to information and news, the Iphone and Ipod Touch can now bring it to you… In a beautiful package only Apple could produce.
Thats right… I’m excited about the latest from Apple. I would recommend it to anyone whether considering the latest Iphone 3G (I drool) or looking to upgrade your current Iphone or Touch. If you have an Iphone or Touch, the 2.0 update is a must. The $10 for the upgrade is worth it. The free apps alone are worth more than $10. The App Store is easy to use and fits right in with the expanding goodness to be found in the Itunes Store. Updating and syncing is painless with the exception of the update to 2.0. If you don’t want to lose music or data stored on your Iphone/Touch, back it all up. It gets wiped clean when you install 2.0.
The possibilities are now endless… we’ve seen the 1st wave of Iphone apps, but it is clear that these apps are barely scratching the surface of what is possible. If I was asked to rate Iphone 2.0 on a scale of 1 to 10, I would give it a 9. Let’s face it… it is the cream of the crop. Why not a 10? Because it is young and definitely not flawless. It is in need of some obvious fixes.
Which brings me to the flaws… or needed enhancements… or my advice to Apple for the next software update… or whatever you’d like to call them.
1st… Better handling of application errors. Why should my Touch crash and restart every time an app crashes? Some apps have an amazing ability to crash (maybe they are poorly coded, I don’t know). But every time they crash, your Iphone/Touch will restart itself completely. Goodness… it reminds me of the “blue screen of death” days of Windows. So… Better error handling please.
2nd… Allowing multiple apps to run simultaneously. Come on… I want to listen to Pandora Radio while playing Jirbo Break while connected to my favorite Instant Messaging client. I’ve seen the option for an app to run in the background, but it’s not enough. I should be able to stop using an app, check my latest tweets from twitter, then continue using the original app where I left off.
3rd… I hate to say it… but we already need a new interface. I love the interface, but it was designed for the original Iphone (without all the apps) and does not handle hundreds of apps well. Hundreds of little icons that all look the same… stretched across multiple screens/pages (with 16 icons per screen)… Is a nightmare. So here is my challenge to Apple: Give us an intuitive interface that lets us group and explore apps from one screen/location.
4th… This isn’t really a needed software upgrade, but I’d like to see app developers increase the quality of their apps (especially if they are selling them). I am curious to see how current apps will develop over time and to see what new apps will come in the future. In either case, apps need to: become more stable, use the unique Iphone features (many apps could use the “rotate Iphone for a landscape view” but just don’t).
In the end… I am happy with the update. It is amazing! But, I am also looking forward to continued improvements and exciting new apps!
