I had noticed that the cable from the TV antenna on the roof of the Institut du Radium building were I had my office was running down against the wall next to my windows. I hacked it, and hooked it to the Apple MacIntosh we had at this time (a 9600 ?), so we could watch some tv late at night. When I arrived in my office that day I met a physicist who told me his father had just called him to tell something important was going on in the US. I went to my office and switched the TV on, and people started coming, after a while the place was quite crowded. At some point I gave a phone call to Kathleen, and she joined us. She was terrified and was almost crying. Later we went back home, and we watched CNN International, the BBC, and the French TV. She asked me how I would feel if a plane would have crashed on the Eiffel tower. I guess it took a little bit more time for us, far from the USA, to understand how the Americans felt watching their country under attack and innocent people killed.
I first talk to Kathleen at a party at the Curie Institute. The music was loud, I couldn't hear her very well. I asked how old she was, I heard "29", and I thought that she was cute AND young. Later I learned that the answer was "39" :) A week later, I was sitting in the Jardin du Luxembourg, and she walked in front of me, and I said Hi, she smiled and said Hi too. Then I started emailing her. I sent her flowers, namely a bunch of red roses. They end up at the front desk of the building she was working in. She had to bring the flowers upstairs to the lab, and everybody was asking her who had sent them. We continue exchanging emails, I was to shy to make any move. One day I received a one line email "The double eight are auspicious". It was Kathleen inviting me for a dinner at her place, rue Daguerre, August 8... Our story started that evening.
Kathleen arrived at the airport, where the team leader was waiting for her, and he brought her immediately to the lab at Institut Curie. The picture is the Sainte Chapelle, located in the center of Paris.
