   October 1781  Cornwallis settles into Yorktown but………….  Greene does also  Expecting reinforcements  Fighting British  Rochambeau and George Washington argue  G.W- French and American troops attack NY  Rochambeau- go to Yorktown  Did go to Yorktown  French arrives- WAR OVER  Last battle of war

   Christmas day, 1776  Trenton NJ  Attack the Hessian (German) Solders  Crossed the Delaware River  Immediately surrendered  Showed the resolve of the Americans  A week laterBattle of Princeton  January, 1777

• Battle of Saratoga
  Nov 30, 1776

   Sept & Oct 1777  Result- Burgoyne surrenders  Turning point- 2 reasons- gets French to join the war and weren’t able to cut off the colonists  Haven’t been able to effectively control the colonies  Moved south

• defeat in NY
  Aug 20, 1776

   General Howe- messed up big time- 32,000 men took to NY  Wanted to enclose the North from the South  Battle of long island  Hudson River Valley  August 1776  20,00 British troops  10,000 Continental Army troops  British troops could see them  Don’t have very many troops  No American navy  Retreated in the middle of the night  They used fishermen’s boats  Thick fog and the wind change/current made them VERY lucky  1st American capital- Philadelphia

   2,500 out of 10,000 during 6 months died  Lack food, weather, and supplies  Significance- test of integrity  Looked like a new army after von Steuben trained the troops

• Battle of Bunker Hill
  Jun 17, 1775

   Continental army/ rebels  Result: British victory, but moral victory for the Americans  “I wish we could sell them another hill at the same price” –Nathaniel Green  British charged up hill and took over fort  1,100 redcoats died  WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE?- TEST QUESTION  the 1,100 dead redcoats

• Lexington and Concord
  Apr 17, 1775

   700 redcoats were marching up to Concord  8 colonist died  Lexington –British won the first battle. –First deaths since Boston Massacre  Britain underestimated the colonists and their willingness to fight.  Redcoats leave Lexington and underestimate the colonists even more.  Walk into Concord(redcoats) nobody’s there.  Militia is watching from a hill and they are saying are we going to let them do this?  Huge group of militia kills a good amount of redcoats and the redcoats retreat. Still being attacked as the go back.  Colonist won Concord  B- 74 die and 200 are missing or unaccounted for  C- 49 die and 41 are missing or unaccounted for  All the colonists hear about the war  A lot of people still have the “Oh No don’t start a war” view  We might as well be declared as a independent colony
