Hidalgo rang a bell in his home town, calling the memebers of his chruch for a meeting. He soon delivered a famous speech calling on peasants to fight for their independence against the Spanish peninsulares. At his speech he he shouted "Death to bad government and death to Spaniards!" Mexicans celebrate Mexican independence Day on September 16th.
In 1807, Napoleon set out to invade Spain and Portugal. Eventually the King of Spain went to prision and the King of Portugal fled to Brazil. This invasion led a seriously weakened Spain and Portugal.
In 1804, there was still a fight for independence. Revolutionaries of Saint Domingue set out for their independence from France. They eventually got their new land and named it Haiti
During 1802, Toussaint's military and political actions made him a hero in Hispaniola. Napoleon back in France was worried. Napoleon decided to send a general to Hispaniola to take control of the colony away from Toussaint. Forces struggled for months, then in 1802 Toussaint agreed to an armistice.
