Even after 40 years, the watch remains very true to the original. Size of the case is 42mm wide, while the crystal is made out of an acrylic compound called Hesalite. Why not sapphire? Because the plastic is shatter-proof (even though it can scratch), and a shattered sapphire crystal in a space shuttle would be a disaster. The movement is a still manually wound Omega Caliber 1861 movement. This has to do with the fact that an automatic movement would be worthless in a gravity-free environment.

(Via www.whitehouse.gov ) Its been exactly 40 years since man first stepped foot on the moon, and today the President welcomed Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin to the White House to honor their achievement. An animated recreation of the first moon landing to celebrate the 40th anniversary of that event. The animation depicts Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon and was created in-house by Swinburne Astronomy Productions. For Professor Matthew Bailes, the recreation exceeded his expectations. If the Moon landing had occurred in 2009, not 1969, this superb high definition video would be what people would be seeing in their lounge rooms instead of the blurry image I remember seeing as a child."

Notice something different about the YouTube logo on the homepage today? It's been made over to honor the 40th anniversary of Neil Armstrong's small step into the history books, with Apollo 11's landing on the moon. Four decades ago today, millions of people crowded around flickering black and white television sets -- or listened in via radio -- nervously waiting to see and hear the crew of Apollo 11 make good on President Kennedy's pledge to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade ...
Forty years ago today, the first humans to visit another sphere bounced around on the magnificent desolation of the moon. The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of Project Apollo and the third human voyage to the Moon. Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Mission Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene 'Buzz' Aldrin, Jr. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon, while Collins orbited above
"Goya's Ghost" is a fantastic movie that I recommend. It is an accurate depiction of The Inquisition, and you get to see what it looked like when someone is "put to the question." America is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the space walk. Why haven't we gone back? And why won't we be colonizing the moon? I have a few ideas, based on what I know, but welcome your thoughts on this topic.

Apollo 8 was the first manned space voyage to another celestial body on 21 December 1968. The three-man crew of Mission Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders became the first humans to see the far side of the Moon with their own eyes, as well as the first humans to see planet Earth from orbit about another celestial body. The mission involved the first manned launch of a Saturn V rocket, originally planned as a low-earth orbit Lunar Module/Command Module test, the mission profile was changed to the more ambitious lunar orbital flight. After launching on December 21, 1968, the crew took three days to travel to the Moon. They orbited ten times over the course of 20 hours, during which the crew made a Christmas Eve television broadcast in which they read the first 10 verses from the Book of Genesis. The crew timed this reading to coincide with a full view of planet Earth hanging in the empty blackness of space while clearly showing the rich diversity of the living planet as indicated in Terran colors, seas, landforms, and weather patterns, rising over the dull gray horizon of the lifeless Moon. At the time, the broadcast was the most watched TV program ever. The Crew spent a total of 20 h 10 m 13 s In Lunar orbit spalshdown was on December 27, 1968.
