EVERETT, Wash. Boeing Co.'s new 787 jetliner finally took to the skies on Tuesday December 15, more than two years later than the company had planned. Pilots Michael Carriker and Randall Neville lifted off in the big blue and white jet shortly after 10 am PST from Everett's Paine Field on a four-hour flight over Washington state, beginning the extensive flight test program needed to obtain the plane's Federal Aviation Administration certification. This is the video of it taking off for the first time
Boeing 787 Dreamliner FIRST FLIGHT / MAIDEN FLIGHT / TAKE OFF / TEST FLIGHT / 12-15-2009 Hi, Well it's been over two years since my Boeing 787 Rollout video and today I am pleased to present the video for it's first flight on 12-15-09. Thanks, Mary. ♫ Visit marywinmusic.com ♫ www.marywinmusic.com
Boeing began eight months of flight testing on the first jet designed and built in the 21st Century at 10:27 am PST when the 787 took off under heavily overcast skies in Everett, Wash. Pilots Mike Carriker and Randy Neville lifted the 390000 lb. test airplane flying north from Paine Field on the start of a nominal five-hour flight that is to end with a landing at Boeing Field in Seattle. The takeoff rotation was at 140 knots. Carriker climbed the 186-ft. long 787 to 2500 feet initially to assure its flight stability. The flight plan calls for him and Neville then to gradually proceed through a series of reduced flap settings while flying east over Moses Lake toward Coer d'Alene, Idaho. Their flight level is not expected to exceed 15000 feet with a speed 250 knots. But all of the day's flight activities will be dictated by the aircraft's performance and the weather, which was heavily overcast with about a 2300 ft. ceiling at takeoff. While Boeing wants the basic flight envelope explored, a safe takeoff and landing are regarded as a complete success.

After takeoff from Everett, the airplane followed a route over the east end of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Capts. Carriker and Neville took the airplane to an altitude of 13200 feet (4023 meters) and an air speed of 180 knots, or about 207 miles (333 kilometers) per hour, customary on a first flight. "Today is truly a proud and historic day for the global team who has worked tirelessly to design and build the 787 Dreamliner - the first all-new jet airplane of the 21st century," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "We look forward to the upcoming flight test program and soon bringing groundbreaking levels of efficiency, technology and passenger comfort to airlines and the flying public." This is the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on it's very first flight. It took off around 10:30 and went immediately out to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This was less than 10 minutes later when it came over Sequim, WA. You can see the chase plane next to it and the landing gear is still down. It was pretty high, very quiet and the camera had trouble focussing on it because of the gray clouds.
