From Kevin Fagan in todays's SF Chronicle: "Being a straight arrow on radio in the 1950s and '60s in the beatnik-hippie capital of San Francisco might not seem like everyone's idea of an easy gig. But everyone was not Aaron Edwards. As newscaster for KSFO-AM, then a music and sports powerhouse, Mr. Edwards turned the ordinarily stolid job into one of the Bay Area's greatest long-running entertainment routines as he riffed off of wacky, popular disc jockey Don Sherwood. While Sherwood poked fun at everything from the platters he spun to the commercials that paid his salary, Mr. Edwards played straight man so effectively it was as if he were climbing out of the loudspeakers of the radio in a suit and tie. Mr. Edwards died June 23 at a care center in El Cerrito of natural causes at 90 years old, and as his friends and family recalled the old days, they couldn't resist cracking up. "Aaron was one of the most gentle, wonderful men who ever lived," said former ABC radio and TV news reporter Peter Cleaveland. "Sherwood just drove Aaron absolutely crazy with his routines, and it was the funniest thing in the world." One of their typical shticks came when Mr. Edwards launched into a commercial, which he had to do between newscasts, Cleaveland remembered. "Sherwood would say, 'The odds are 3621 to 1 that Aaron won't get through this next commercial without breaking up,' and Aaron would get going." Sherwood would then do everything he could, including exposing parts of his body, to ...

Home Improvement is an American television sitcom starring Tim Allen, which aired from 1991 to 1999. The show was created by Matt Williams, Carmen Finestra and David MacFadzean. In the 1990s, it was one of the most watched sitcoms, winning many awards. The series launched Tim Allen's acting career and also was the start of the television career of Pamela Anderson, who was part of the cast for the first two seasons. The show's title is a pun: it refers to physical improvement of houses, as well as to improving life with family, friends, work, and school. Tim Allen, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning had a reunion in a show called Tim Allen Presents: A User's Guide to Home Improvement in 2003. Tim presented his own favorite clips from the show, insider's tips, personal reflections and a question and answer session with the live audience. The special is included on the season 8 DVD set. Based on the stand-up comedy of Tim Allen, Home Improvement made its debut on ABC on September 17, 1991, and was one of the highest-rated sitcoms for almost the entire decade. It went to #1 in the ratings during the 1993--1994 season; that year, Allen also had the #1 book (Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man) and movie (The Santa Clause).[2] Midway throughout the show's run, it was competing against another highly-rated sitcom, Frasier, which slightly dropped the ratings. It did, however, remain a Top 10 show. The final episode aired on May 25, 1999 with a 90-minute, three-part episode entitled ...
Here's another "web exclusive", courtesy of 'the vault'. I saw the band at the Sydney Opera House 4 days previously (22 May 1991 - second row). I still have the ticket stub: for a concert missing from the JML archives! I tried taping it, too, but the cassette came out blank - luckily, ABC-FM broadcast the Brisbane concert. And since there's a big gap in my JML playlist, here it is. Not that I'm the Trio's greatest fan - it was a bit limited, given Trilok's "open" style. But flashes of brilliance still come through - and clips with Dominic are rare! My home: www.myspace.com - but check avs002 first!

Amy Goodman visits Google's Mountain View office to present her book "Breaking the Sound Barrier". This event took place on April 30, 2010, as part of the Authors@Google series. Amy Goodman breaks through the corporate medias lies, sound-bites, and silence in this wide-ranging new collection of articles. In place of the usual suspects, the experts who, in Goodmans words, know so little about so much, explain the world to us, and get it so wrong," this accessible, lively collection allows the voices the corporate media exclude and ignore to be heard loud and clear. From community organizers in New Orleans, to the courageous American soldiers who've said "No" to Washington's wars, to the victims of torture and police violence, we are given the extraordinary opportunity to hear ordinary people standing up and speaking out. As Willie Nelson says, "There is no one who should be more on the mainstream media, every day reminding us and giving us a glimpse of the power of one." Written with all of the fierce intelligence and passion for truth that millions have come to expect from Amy Goodmans reportage, Breaking the Sound Barrier is, in Arianna Huffington's words, "crusading journalism at its best." and, here's an example: www.youtube.com

Google Tech Talk February 10, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Dino Farinacci. We will describe the initial problem statement LISP was created for. Since fall of 2006, when the IAB held a routing workshop in Amsterdam, we have found many more use cases for the level of indirection LISP brings. LISP is taking the overloaded semantics of the IP address, where a network device's identity address and location address are separated so one can keep one of the addresses fixed and while changing the other. This first part of a 3-part series will explain the problem statements, provide an architecture deep-dive of the idea, and illustrate how the LISP protocols are used. This session is necessary prerequisite for LISP Part 2 and LISP Part 3. Dino Farinacci: Dino originally joined Cisco in spring of 1991 and was one of the first two Cisco Fellows. He has built routers for 27 years. Dino currently works in the Data Center Business Unit at cisco where his focus is on building a next-generation platform and operating system for Enterprise and Data Center environments. This platform is the Nexus 7000 running NX-OS which shipped in April of 2008. His expertise specializes in routing protocols where he has intimate knowledge and implementation experience with IS-IS, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, IGMP, PIM, and MSDP, as well as IPv6 and MPLS protocols. He is an advocate for modular operating systems. Dino also has been a member of the IETF for 19 years making many contributions over this period of time ...
Documentary on the "nature of today's prejudices." Follows two men (equal in all measurable aspects, except skin color) as they particpate in a variety of "everyday" life interactions and situations to test levels of prejudice based on skin colors. Shows how two young men in St. Louis, one white, one black, but otherwise similar in background, appearance, etc., are treated differently in various situations as they go about shopping, applying for work, and looking for rental housing. In the 1960s, black Americans were promised that this country would not judge people by the color of the their skin. Three decades later, this video investigates situations in which blacks and whites continue to be treated differently. Video raises the question of the relation between discrimination in everyday social exchanges and what sociology calls "structural racism," the systematic exclusion of people of color from full access to social resources. Where does this program root the problem? In the individual bias of a few people? Or are individuals expressions of a society based on white privilege? Does everyone who identifies as white have a stake in upholding the racial hierarchy with its tendency for white preferential treatment? On the other hand, what responsibility do European Americans have for eliminating or helping to eliminate racial preference? How would some of the problems indicated in the film be addressed or remedied? Descript'n 1 videocassette (19 min.) : sd., col. ; 1/2 in ...

Ken Auletta visits Google's Mountain View office to present his book "Googled: The End of the World As We Know It". This event took place on November 11, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series There are companies that create waves and those that ride or are drowned by them. As only he can, bestselling author Ken Auletta takes readers for a ride on the Google wave, telling the story of how it formed and crashed into traditional media businesses—from newspapers to books, to television, to movies, to telephones, to advertising, to Microsoft. With unprecedented access to Googles founders and executives, as well as to those in media who are struggling to keep their heads above water, Auletta reveals how the industry is being disrupted and redefined. Using Google as a stand-in for the digital revolution, Auletta takes readers inside Googles closed-door meetings and paints portraits of Googles notoriously private founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, as well as those who work with—and against—them. In his narrative, Auletta provides the fullest account ever told of Googles rise, shares the secret sauce of Googles success, and shows why the worlds of new and old media often communicate as if residents of different planets. Google engineers start from an assumption that the old ways of doing things can be improved and made more efficient, an approach that has yielded remarkable results— Google will generate about $20 billion in advertising revenues this year, or more than the ...

Scooby-Doo is a long-running American animated series produced for Saturday morning television in several different versions from 1969 to the present. The original series, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, was created for Hanna-Barbera Productions by writers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, CBS executive Fred Silverman, and character designer Iwao Takamoto. Hanna-Barbara produced numerous spin-offs and related works until being absorbed in 1997 into Warner Bros. Animation, which has handled production since then. Although the format of the show and the cast (and ages) of characters have varied significantly over the years, the most familiar versions of the show feature a talking dog named Scooby-Doo and four twenty-five-year-olds: Fred "Freddie" Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers. Shaggys voice was provided by Top 40 DJ Casey Kasem. Scoobys speech patterns closely resembled an earlier cartoon dog, Astro from The Jetsons [1]. These five characters (officially collectively known as "Mystery, Inc.", but never referred to as such in the original series) drive around in the Mystery Machine van (a kind of a psychedelic Deadhead mobile) [2], solving mysteries by exposing seemingly otherworldly ghosts and monsters as flesh and blood crooks, with the young investigators discovering that criminal had used costumes, latex masks and special effects to frighten or deceive witnesses. That puts the series squarely in the old tradition of the "impossible crime" mystery ...

What level of threat was Saddam Hussein's regime postin to the US compared to the level of threat the US Government has been posing to Iraq after twelve years of embargo. bombing raids and now war? Where have the billions of US taxpayer dollars gone that were spent on both the 1991 Gulf War and the present war and who will win the contracts to rebuild Iraq? What kind of oil reserves does Iraq have and how does this factor into the equation? Why do the US public and the rest of the world see such different media coverage of both wars to the point of drawing opposite conclusions as to motives and end results? "Hidden Wars of Desert Storm" helps answer these questions by providing an easy-to-understand background on the relationship between Washington and Baghdad as well as on the origins, developement and aftermath of the 1991 Gulf War. Featuring such key-players as then Desert Storm Commander Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf. UNSCOM team-leader Scott Ritter and UN Iraq program director Denis Halliday, this documentary has been broadcast all over the world but has little if any exposure in the mainstream US media. Warning: Contains scenes of violence

Original version at www.youtube.com I managed to put together a video, at last! Not using Windows Movie Maker, of course: I used another software I had never used before, and that's why the editing is a bit "rough". Oh, and it's darker than expected, as well... oh well. The song is Julee Cruise's "Questions In A World Of Blue", again -- but this is an alternative version, with some different instrumentation. It was composed by Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch. The song appears on Cruise's second album, "The Voice Of Love", and on the "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" original soundtrack. All instruments and vocals are played/sung by me. Twin Peaks is an American Emmy Award nominated Peabody and Golden Globe-winning television serial drama that follows the investigation of the brutal death of popular, respected teenager and homecoming queen, Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), headed by Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan). Created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, Twin Peaks's pilot episode was first broadcast on April 8, 1990 on the ABC Network, which led to another eleven episodes being produced, and a second season, which aired until June 10, 1991. The show is set in a small fictional Washington town known as "Twin Peaks", and was primarily filmed in the Washington towns of Snoqualmie and North Bend. After its debut episode on April 8, 1990, Twin Peaks became one of that year's top-rated shows, a critical success both nationally and internationally. Reflecting its devoted cult fan ...
ALTERNATIVE VERSION at www.youtube.com I hate Windows Movie Maker. Malvi & I spent (well, I should say "wasted") three good hours recording and editing videos... but when I tried to export the damn file, everything crashed. I'm a bit pissed right now, but I'll be okay very soon. However, I wanted to upload something new on YouTube -- so here's this song. I know the video's not actually a video. I know it sucks. It sucks, terribly. I'll try to put together a better video for the other version of this song I recorded. The song's called "Questions In A World Of Blue". It was composed by Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch, and was originally sung by Julee Cruise. The song appears on her second album, "The Voice Of Love", and on the "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" original soundtrack. All instruments and vocals are played/sung by me. My version of "Laura Palmer's Theme" (also known as "Love Theme From Twin Peaks"), by Angelo Badalamenti. Twin Peaks is an American Emmy Award-nominated, Peabody- and Golden Globe-winning television serial drama created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, first broadcast on April 8, 1990 and last broadcast on June 10, 1991. The show is set in the fictional town of Twin Peaks, Washington. The primary filming took place in Snoqualmie and North Bend, Washington. The central plotline is the story of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) and his investigation of the murder of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), a popular local student and homecoming queen whose plastic-wrapped body is found on a river bank. Twin Peaks was originally broadcast on ABC and, in its short first season, was one of the network's most successful television programs. In its longer second season, low viewer ratings led to cancellation. Despite this, it became a pop culture touchstone, and inspired a film prequel, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992). The series also influenced several subsequent television series, including Northern Exposure, Desperate Housewives, Picket Fences, Wild Palms, The X-Files, and Lost. Because of its success, in the mid-to-late 1990s, Bravo re-aired Twin Peaks in the US from 2003-2004. Currently, NBC Universal's (also the current owner of Bravo) horror-themed cable channel Chiller, which launched on March 1, 2007, is airing the series. Twin Peaks was ranked on TV Guide ...
Television, the Drug of the Nation - a song from the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (Michael Franti, 1991). Lyrics: One nation under God has turned into one nation under the influence of one drug. [Chorus:] Television, the drug of the nation, breeding ignorance and feeding radiation. (2x) TV, its satellite links a United States of unconsciousness. Apathetic, therapeutic and extremely addictive. The methadone metronome pumping out 150 channels 24 hours a day. You can flip through all of them and still, there's nothing worth watching. TV is the reason why less than 10% of our nation reads books daily, why most people think Central America means Kansas, socialism means un-American, and apartheid is a new headache remedy. Absorbed in its world it's so hard to find us. It shapes our mind the most. Maybe the mother of our nation should remind us that we're sitting too close to the [Chorus:] Television, the drug of the Nation, breeding ignorance and feeding radiation (2x) TV, is it the reflector or the director? Does it imitate us or do we imitate it? Because a child watches 1500 murders before he's 12 years old, and then we wonder why we've created a Jason generation that learns to laugh rather than abhor the horror. TV is the place where armchair generals and quarterbacks can experience first hand the excitement of video warfare, as a theme song is sung in the background. Sugar sweet sitcoms that leave us with a bad aftertaste, while pop stars metamorphosize into soda pop ...
