Jackie Brown is a 1997 crime film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. It is an adaptation of the novel Rum Punch by American novelist Elmore Leonard and pays homage to 1970s blaxploitation films. The film stars Pam Grier, Robert Forster, Robert De Niro, Samuel L. Jackson, Bridget Fonda and Michael Keaton. It was Tarantino's third film following his successes with Reservoir Dogs (1992) and Pulp Fiction (1994). Grier and Forster were both veteran actors but neither had performed a leading role in many years. Jackie Brown revitalized both actors' careers. The film garnered Forster an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and Jackson and Grier were nominated for Golden Globe Awards.

(Edmonton) When it comes to art design in the film industry, U of A fine arts grad Todd Cherniawsky is on the Hollywood A list. Hes worked on blockbusters such as Sphere, The Hulk, Oceans 13, War of the Worlds, and most recently, James Cameron's Avatar, the biggest grossing film of all time. In fact, Cherniawsky can claim a share in the Oscar for best art direction that Avatar won at the recent Academy Awards. He was responsible for designing the vehicles that appear on the fictional planet Pandora, turning, he says, to Albertas oilsands for inspiration. In a video interview with ExpressNews, Cherniawsky talked about how the U of A prepared him for his career.
Tom and Jerry is a series of animated theatrical shorts created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer that centered on a never-ending rivalry between a housecat (Tom) and a mouse (Jerry) whose chases and battles often involved comic violence. Hanna and Barbera ultimately wrote and directed one hundred and fourteen Tom and Jerry cartoons at the MGM cartoon studio in Hollywood, California between 1940 and 1959, when the animation unit was closed. The original series is notable for having won the Academy Awards for Best Short Subject (Cartoons) seven times, tying it with Walt Disney's Silly Symphonies as the theatrical animated series with the most Oscars. In 2000, TIME named the series one of the greatest television shows of all time.

I thought it high time that the great Alfred Newman should be featured here and for one of his most beautiful and touching scores. Alfred Newman was a remarkable composer during Hollywood's 'golden age' and he received no fewer than 45 Academy Award nominations, making him the second most nominated person in the history of the Academy Awards, tied with John Williams (Newman's scores for The Hurricane and The Prisoner of Zenda were also nominated at a time when composers were not eligible to be nominated in the score category). He won the Oscar 9 times; in 1940 he was nominated for 4 different films. Between 1938 and 1957, he was nominated twenty years in a row. An extraordinary achievemrnt and a remarkable musician. His intensely romantic style was characterised by a seemingly limitless melodic gift and a penchant for extraordinarily rich multi-layered string writing. He was also a great conductor, and had an uncanny knack for capturing the mood of a story or the personality of a screen character. His score for this famous film (directed by John Ford, starring Maureen O'Hara, Roddy MacDowall and Walter Pidgeon) is one of his finest, and certainly helped the film win the Academy Award for best picture of its year, though Newman's score was sadly overlooked. Original stills and posters accompany the separate music soundtrack, conducted by Mr Newman himself. Once again, the concertmaster here is the ubiquitous and wonderfully gifted Louis Kaufman.

bit.ly Kon-Tiki is the Academy Award-winning film of an astonishing adventure, a journey spanning 4300 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean by raft. Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, Norwegian biologist Thor Heyerdahl suspected that the South Sea Islands had been settled by an ancient race from thousands of miles to the east, led by the mythical hero Kon-Tiki. Heyerdahl knew that the trade winds and ocean currents off the South-American coastline bear in the direction of Polynesia. Ridiculed by the scientific establishment, who had concluded that a voyage by aboriginal balsa raft from Peru to Polynesia was impossible, he decided to prove the possibility of his theory by duplicating the legendary voyage. The ensuing expedition was hailed as one of the most fantastic feats of daring and courage of its time.

Best Story and Screenplay nominee, 1949 Academy Awards. Best Picture nominee, 1949 National Board of Review. Director: Sidney Meyers. The story of a lonely young boy growing up in Harlem. Using a semi-documentary technique, the film-makers realistically capture the hostile environment which leads the boy to delinquency. The youth is sent to Wiltwyck School for rehabilitation, where a psychiatrist and counselor try to break through the wall of silence which the boy uses to hide his fear and bitterness. The Quiet One relates, in semidocumentary fashion, the inner workings of the Wiltwyck School for Boys at Esopus, New York. The nonprofessional cast is headed by Donald Thompson as emotionally disturbed youth Donald Peters. Under the compassionate ministrations of a psychiatric counselor (Clarence Cooper, a real-life Wiltwyck counselor), Donald recalls the various traumatic events that have led up to his present troubled state. Out of the tortured experiences of a 10-year-old Harlem Negro boy, cruelly rejected by his loved ones but rescued by the people of the Wiltwyck School, a new group of local film-makers has fashioned a genuine masterpiece in the way of a documentary drama. In several respects this hour-long picture, shaped from the stuff of modern life, is comparable to those stark film dramas which we have had from Italy since ...

In the film, Smith plays Ben Thomas, an IRS agent with a fateful secret who embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers. Academy Award nominee Will Smith reunites with the director and producers of The Pursuit of Happyness for this emotional drama concerning an IRS agent whose quest for redemption is unexpectedly complicated after he inadvertently falls in love. Ben Thomas is an IRS agent with a fateful secret. Assuming the identity of his younger brother, Ben sets out in search of redemption. Instead, Ben discovers true love while forever changing the lives of seven complete strangers. Woody Harrelson, Rosario Dawson, Michael Ealy, and Barry Pepper co-star. From the director of The Pursuit of Happyness and starring two-time Academy Award® nominee Will Smith comes the stirring and emotionally suspenseful tale of a man with a haunting secret who sets out to redeem himself by drastically changing the lives of seven total strangers. But what Ben Thomas never expects is that he will fall in love with one of the strangers and that it is she who will start to change him. A gripping mystery and surprising love story, Seven Pounds asks provocative questions about life and death, regret and forgiveness, strangers and friendship, love and redemption and pursues the connections that tie human fates together in surprising ways. It begins with a list of seven names: Ben Thomas, Holly Apelgren, Connie Tepos, George Ristuccia, Nicholas Adams, Ezra Turner and Emily Posa. The only thing they share in common are that each has reached a turning point and is in dire need of help, from financial to spiritual to medical and unbeknownst to them, Ben has carefully chosen each to be part of his plan of redemption. But it is Emily Posa (Rosario Dawson), a lively cardiac patient, who throws a wrench into the works as she does the one thing Ben thought impossible grows close to him and turns his view of the world and what is possible inside out. Available on DVD at www.strandreleasing.com Having suffered as a boy under a brutal Communist-era coach, champion Hungarian gymnast Miklos moves to Canada years later in search of a new start only to find himself unwittingly perpetuating the very same cycle of abuse among his own pupils. Redemption appears in the unlikely form of Kyle, a troubled, young Canadian teen with the potential to become a world champion. The friendship and rivalry between teacher and student each played by actual gymnasts (one, Kyle Shewfelt, an Olympic medallist) forms the basis of this gripping, resonant sports drama. Beautifully shot and edited, effortlessly evoking its respective time-periods, and through them, the clash of different cultures and values, WHITE PALMS made its international premiere in Directors Fortnight at Cannes 2006 and was the official Hungarian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award®.

Classic Film Scores: 1. Have you got a story for me? 2. Alone on the farm 3. You are Karen ... music from the motion picture soundtrack OUT OF AFRICA composed by John Barry. Credits: Music Scoring Mixer: Dan Wallin Digital Engineers: Nicholas Basich, Mike Novitch Mastered by: Stephen Marcussen Album Produced by: John Barry (1985) Synopsis: Out of Africa is a 1985 film[1] based loosely on the autobiographical book by Isak Dinesen (pseudonym of Karen Blixen) published in 1937, as well as Dinesen's Shadows on the Grass and other sources. The movie received 28 film awards, including seven Academy Awards. The film opens in Denmark as an older Karen Blixen (Streep) briefly remembers hunting in Denmark, then the years she spent in Africa (19141931). Looming large in her memory is the figure of Denys Finch Hatton (Redford), a local big-game hunter she met when she arrived in Africa to start what she thought would be a dairy farm together with her husband, Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke (Brandauer). Things turn out differently for her than anticipated, as the blue-blooded but poor Baron has used her money to purchase a coffee plantation instead of a dairy farm. He also shows little inclination to put any work into it, preferring to hunt game instead. While from the beginning, their marriage is depicted as mostly symbiotic (her family has money, while the Baron has a title), Karen does eventually develop feelings for him and is distressed when she learns of his extramarital affairs. To make matters worse, she contracts syphilis from her philandering husband, which at the time was a very dangerous condition, necessitating her return to Denmark for a possible cure using the (1910) medicine Salvarsan (before the advent of penicillin). After she has recovered and returned to Africa, a relationship between her and Denys begins to develop. However, after many unsuccessful attempts at turning their affair into a lasting relationship, she realizes that Denys is as impossible to own or tame as Africa itself. Karen lives surrounded by fine European furniture and opens a school to teach European reading and customs to the native people, whereas Denys prefers the freedom of the outdoors and leaves the natives to their own customs. His eventual death in a plane crash is foreshadowed in the movie by the tale of Maasai people who would perish in captivity. At his funeral in the Ngong Hills, as Karen prepares to toss a handful of soil into the grave, she hesitates, then turns away from the other Europeans, brushing her hand instead through her hair, in the native custom. In the film Karen is forced to return to Denmark, following a catastrophic fire that destroys her entire crop of coffee. After more than 20 years, Karen has become an author, a storyteller, writing about her experiences and letters from Africa, and remembering.
On February 22, 2009, the 81st Academy Awards will happened. Will Heath Ledger win Best Supporting Actor for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight? Celebrities Referenced: - Clint Eastwood - Heath Ledger - Bernie Mac - Shia LaBeouf - Dane Cook - Robert Downey Jr. - Samuel L. Jackson - Ben Stiller - M. Night Shyamalan Movies Referenced: - The Dark Knight - Soul Men - Eagle Eye - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - My Best Friend's Girl - Iron Man - Tropic Thunder - Gran Torino This is a parody. So, that's why there are false nominees that don't belong in the right category in this video. The reason why I made Bernie Mac won the Oscar instead of Heath Ledger is because last year, I made a video about the Kids Choice Awards on how SpongeBob would win for Favorite Cartoon. Turns out, SpongeBob lost the award after having it 7 times in a row. I was trying hard to finish this video on January 22, 2009, but due to conflicts, it got pushed back. The reasons why were: - One year ago, Heath Ledger died. - That was the day the Oscars Nominees were announced. - I could start other projects in good timing. But anyways, 5 days later is no big deal. Special Thanks to SSJ4Furanki for voicing some characters
Hard to believe, but it's true, there have been no Honorary Oscar female recipients in 14 years. So far only eight women have been recognized for their cinematic contributions with The Academy Honorary Award: Greta Garbo (1955), Lillian Gish (1971), Mary Pickford (1976), editor Margaret Booth (1978), Barbara Stanwyck (1982), Myrna Loy (1991), Sophia Loren (1991), and Deborah Kerr (1994). Ms. Lansbury is a perfect and one of the most deserving candidates to be recognized with an Honorary Oscar for her outstanding contribution to the art of film. Legendary Angela Lansbury, CBE (born 16 October 1925) is an English actress and singer whose career has spanned six decades. Highly respected for her versatility, Ms. Lansbury has been nominated for three Academy Awards, eighteen Emmy Awards, won five Tony Awards and six Golden Globes. Ms. Lansbury was contracted by MGM while still a teenager and nominated for an Academy Award for her first film, Gaslight (1944). Year later she was again nominated for Best Supporting Actress, this time for The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945). Ms. Lansbury's performance in The Manchurian Candidate (1962) in which she played Mrs. Iselin, the cold-blooded mother of a war veteran is not only her best screen performance, but also one of the greatest female performances ever to be filmed. She won much critical praise for her performance, as well as Golden Globe and NBA Award, Ms. Lansbury received her third Oscar nomination, but lost to Patty Duke. Her ...

Yes, thats right, everyone! I will start uploading Haruhi Suzumiya no Yuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) forthwith! Starting with this episode! As always, it is ripped straight from DVD fresh for you, therefore, it will be in DVD order. Explanation of this follows below in the disclaimer. We are introduced to the characters in a rather strange fashion, with an awesomely terrible homemade movie directed by the one and only Haruhi Suzumiya. What character attributes can we glean from this episode? Well, we see that the cameraman is not only unsatisfied with the film as a whole, but is quite jealous of Koizumi horning in on Mikuru, Mikuru is CHARGIN HER LAZER, and Haruhi rivals Ed Wood as the worst director of all time. Good thing shes cute. All things considered, just listen and laugh. The real story begins next episode. Despite the title, this is actually The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, episode 0, The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina. I dont own any rights to it or Id be rich right now. Very, very rich. DISCLAIMER! The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was broadcast out of order on Japanese television (kinda like Hidamari Sketch! and Rental Magica), and it was quite unexpected and hilarious. When Kyoto Animation, a company known for their unorthodox anime practices, was confronted about the change, they gave the excuse that Haruhi came and switched the episodes around. Whether she really did or not remains a mystery (J), but the fact is that now we have to deal with this confusingness. So Ill try and explain. The DVD order is, for the most part, the chronological order of the episodes to where they make more sense, the only exception being that 0 is actually 11 chronologically. That being said, if you want to watch it in its broadcast order the way it was intended (and its worth it, trust me), wait for me to upload all the episodes, and then watch them in this order: 0, 1, 2, 7, 3, 9, 8, 10, 13, 4, 12, 11, 5, 6. You wont regret it, and will likely be much more satisfied with the final episode. Or you could, yknow, buy the Limited Edition DVDs like I did, which come with the broadcast order on separate discs, and not have to wait. Cool boxes and extras too, you can see my reviews of them on my RamenPoodle account. Your choice, but I always advocate supporting the R1 industry, its not doin so hot right now. I suggest you do the same, so we can continue to have great anime. Enjoy!

Sadly, on the day this is posted, January 22nd 2009, is exactly a year after the unfortunate, tragic, and untimely passing of Heath Ledger, who dedicated so much to his last role, he gave a timeless performance with a riveting character, the Joker. I post this as a tribute to his work as the Joker and dedicate it to his memory. I DO NOT CLAIM OWNERSHIP TO THE CONTENT, but this is non profit and for entertainment purposes only and is protected by the copyright act of 1976, and this is simply a dedication to one of the greatest performances in film history. Will Smith opens his new film Seven Pounds at the premiere in London's Leicester Square. From the director of The Pursuit of Happyness and starring two-time Academy Award nominee Will Smith comes the stirring and emotionally suspenseful tale of a man with a haunting secret who sets out to redeem himself by drastically changing the lives of seven total strangers. Once his plan is set in motion, nothing can alter it. Or so he thinks. But what Ben Thomas never expects is that he will fall in love with one of the strangers – and that it is she who will start to change him. A gripping mystery and surprising love story, Seven Pounds asks provocative questions about life and death, regret and forgiveness, strangers and friendship, love and redemption – and pursues the connections that tie human fates together in surprising ways. It begins with a list of seven names: Ben Thomas, Holly Apelgren, Connie Tepos, George Ristuccia, Nicholas Adams, Ezra Turner and Emily Posa. The only thing they share in common are that each has reached a turning point and is in dire need of help, from financial to spiritual to medical – and unbeknownst to them, Ben has carefully chosen each to be part of his plan of redemption. But it is Emily Posa (Rosario Dawson), a lively cardiac patient, who throws a wrench into the works as she does the one thing Ben thought impossible – grows close to him – and turns his view of the world and what is possible inside out.
