Tropical Storm Aila struck southern Bangladesh and eastern India on May 27, 2009. The New York Times reported that floods and mudslides killed at least 191 people and left hundreds of thousands more homeless. As of May 27, the death toll was expected to rise. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terra satellite captured this true-color image of Aila on May 25, 2009, the same day that the storm temporarily strengthened to a Category 1 cyclone. Aila almost completely fills this scene, stretching from the Bay of Bengal deep into India, Bangladesh, and Burma (Myanmar). On May 25, Ailas wind speeds ranged from 74 kilometers per hour (46 miles per hour or 40 knots) to 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour or 65 knots). According to the Associated Press, some 2.3 million people were affected by Aila, many of them stranded in flooded villages. Storm surges in Bangladesh flooded agricultural areas with salty water. Home to roughly 25000 residents, the coastal island Nijhum Dwip was reported to be completely submerged. As of May 27, 2009, many rural villages had not yet been reached by relief workers, and the death toll was expected to rise significantly as search and rescue efforts continued. Nearly 115 people have been killed by a cyclone that ripped through Bangladesh and West Bengal, India.
Devastation in Sundarbans after Cyclone Aila's fury abates.
Cyclone Aila slammed into parts of eastern India on Monday the 25th. Heavy rains caused flooding in the streets of West Bengal's state capital Kolkata. Strong winds uprooted trees and communication lines. Rescue workers struggled to remove fallen trees on roads and buildings. Completely shaken by the whirlwinds, locals say their daily routine had come to a grinding halt. [Bimal Pal, Kolkata Resident]: "This is the first time I'm experiencing such a devastating natural calamity in my whole life. Barring from the past experience, what is gone, still we are facing huge problems in every part of the sector." A day after the cyclone, the situation is still far from normal. [Kalyan Chakravarthy, Local Resident]: "Situation is still very bad. Yesterday was a real disaster. Nearly 100-120 trees were uprooted on one stretch of road alone, blocking the entire way. Office passengers had to walk back from their work as all transport was affected." Heavy rains triggered by the storm also raised river levels and burst mud embankments in the Sundarbans delta in West Bengal. The affected area is home to hundreds of thousands of people as well as the world's biggest tiger reserve. The cyclone killed at least 33 people, most victims were either drowned or crushed by collapsing houses and uprooted trees.
Now to Bangladesh where Cyclone Aila is causing widespread damage along the coast. Rising flood waters there are forcing thousands of residents from their homes. Floods ravaged coastal parts of Bangladesh Monday the 25th, leaving thousands of families homeless. Those fortunate enough to escape the rising flood waters walked to temporary shelters, while others were left stranded. [Mosheleuddin, Villager]: "The water from the sea entered our village and flooded our homes. All our houses were flooded. No dry place remains." The storm surge from Aila washed away dozens of shrimp farms and flooded rice fields. With Aila tracking towards the coast the Bangladesh Weather Bureau has kept storm warning in place for the ports at Chittagong, Mongla and Cox's Bazar. Almost 40 have perished in Bangladesh. This poor south Asian country is battered by storms every year. A cyclone in November 2007 ravaged a large part of the country's coast, killing nearly 3500 people and displacing around two million.
Devastation reigns in Bangladesh after a deadly cyclone hit the country. Here's a look at the deadly wake of Cyclone Aila. The latest seasonal monsoon in Bangladesh has killed at least 130 and forced thousands from their homes. Cyclone Aila has left at least 200 dead in Bangladesh and eastern India combined, while millions have been stranded by the floodwaters and are living in temporary shelters. In Bangladesh, the cyclone triggered tidal surges that forced inhabitants out of their homes. Carrying as much of their belongings as possible, many struggled to wade through the flood waters. Officials in Bangladesh have moved about half a million people to temporary shelters. [Shariful Islam, Villager]: "All the people of our village were in the cyclone shelter, with their cattle. The roads and land were under four feet of water. Our houses flooded, so all the men, women, and children took shelter here." Large areas for crops have been destroyed by the storm and survivors are facing a shortage of food and drinking water. The cyclone swept through many areas still recovering from Cyclone Sidr in November 2007, which killed 3500 people and left at least a million homeless. Officials say the death toll from Aila is expected to rise in coming days.
Cyclone Aila killed more than 40 people in Bangladesh and thousands of people were displaced.
Aside from Bangladesh, a cyclone that has also hit parts of eastern India, has left a trail of destruction. Tidal surges and flooding have forced some half a million people from their homes and killed almost three dozen people. Cyclone Aila slammed into parts of eastern India on Monday the 25th. A short duration storm hit Kolkata on 3rd May,2009. afternoon. This kind of storm, known as Kalbaishakhi in Bengali generally occurs in Summer and quite common every year but generally comes without warning. The duration of this kind of storm is shor tand so the damages are generally limited. This storm is a welcome sign to the people suffering from the spell of summer as it has a cooling effect for a few following days. This video clip was taken in south Kolkata by a N95 mobile camera. on 3rd May,2009.
Torrential rain due to side effect of cyclonic storm Aila had left the gate entrance at Kuldiha, Orissa, a mud trap for a 2wd. After a lot of sliding, precariously close to the forest iron gate and the trench by the side, Safari VTT somehow was maneuvered to the grassy patch at the other side. Kuldiha road is totally uphill from this gate, and quite a few anxious moments were encountered. All in all, though a very fantastic experience, a forest journey and stay during torrential rain is absolutely different -- normally the forests are closed in the monsoons. All the gutters and overflowing water on the forest track and the sliding and experiencing the wilderness was an experience by itself.
Cyclone Aila hit South Bengal and Kolkata during daytime of May 25, 2009. It caused moderate destruction in some areas of Kolkata while communication and traffic was affected in a major way. The wind speeds were reportedly up to 120 kmph. The video here was shot at around 2pm, when the storm was not that strong and we could actually go out (of course in a car) for lunch at a stall nearby. We would come to know later that the wind speeds and destruction were all there. Those were unleashed not at Kolkata but at the Sunderbans, the deltaic mangrove region at the confluence of the Hooghly and the Bay of Bengal. Thatched houses in numerous inhabited island villages were razed. That was the lesser problem. Hundreds of kilometres of dyke wall breached in that single afternoon of Aila fury. Water surged into agricultural land and salined it, thus choking the source of livelihood of the people in those villages. Down the centuries, Sunderbans has been protecting Kolkata & south Bengal from the fury of nature. How about Bengal doing something now to repay the debt of Sunderbans?
At least 19 people have been killed in West Bengal, four in Kolkata alone as heavy winds and rain lashed the state after a depression over the Bay on Bengal intensified into cyclonic storm Aila.
Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated before cyclone Aila hit the Bay of Bengal, killing at least 17 people. Authorities have said they can shelter in makeshift camps until the storm passes - but meteorologists say the worst is yet to come. Al Jazeera's Rosie Garthwaite reports.
Over 1 lakh people have been badly affected by the cyclone AILA in West Bengal.
