The actors in this portrayal each must be physically strong in body and mind to endure the pain they must suffer to present this depiction.
I amvery passionate about language study travel, and I love to improve my Spanish while being immersed locally in a Spanish-speaking country. So in February of 2010 I spent 13 days in Mexico, with a home base in Guadalajara, Mexicos second largest city. I studied Spanish at the Guadalajara Language Centre and stayed with a local family in Tlaquepaque, a picturesque neighbourhood in the southern part of Guadalajara. In addition to my 2 hours of language studies every day at the Guadalajara Language Centre, I did a number of excursions: I went to downtown Guadalajara and visited the impressive baroque church and the historic core of the city. My excursions in Tlaquepaque included a guided visit with a tourist policeman who took me up onto the bell tower of one of Tlaquepaques churches. I also got to see some samples of the artwork and handicrafts that are produced in Tlaquepaque, which is renowned for its galleries and arts stores. I visited the neighbouring arts & crafts market of Tonala, a huge outdoor market with hundreds of interesting vendors. Longer excursions took me to Lake Chapala, a popular retirement destinations for Americans and Canadians trying to escape our cold winters. My local guide Jose Orozco took me to Mexcala Island, a prison island with buildings from the early 1800s, the pretty town of Chapala and the popular retirement town of Ajijic where so many gringos have settled down permanently. We also went on a tour to the magic village of Tequila which is ...

Visiting Ajijic Mexico February 2010.
I love Ajijic! My late wife, Barbara Moore, and I lived in Ajijic off and on for 10 years during the 1960s and 1970s. We made many wonderful friends who stayed friends for years. Some of those friends were artists and writers, and I photographed them at the time, knowing they would eventually accomplish great things. And all have. Here you will find: Gina Desart (Hildreth) -- Taught creative writing at the University of Arizona (same time I was there) and wrote three novels, all suspense. Her husband, Philip, was also a writer. She died in New York in 1979. Willard Marsh -- taught creative writing at USC and published two books and some 80 short stories. His novel, The Week With No Friday, is set in Ajijic and would be of interest to anyone who has lived there. He lived with his wife George (she was a writer, too) and died in 1970. Jim Kelly -- worked at advertising in New York, then moved to Ajijic full-time with his Danish wife, Gerda. He has written three novels. Tink Strother -- Lived with Carlos Lopez Ruiz (next) and painted portraits in Mexico. She eventually returned to Çalifornia, taking Carlos, and they opened a gallery and a school together. I have a couple of her paintings, including a portrait of Barbara. She died in California 2007. Carlos Lopez Ruiz -- born in Bogata, Columbia. Studied art in the US and moved to Mexico where we ran and played for years. I have many of his paintings. He died in California 1972. Ernesto Linares (real name Butterlin) -- an ...
This is for my new friend Mirella Chacon Crose, who loves Ajijic and has posted many beautiful photographs of this lovely village on Lake Chapala, some 30 minutes south of Guadalajara. I used to live in Ajijic. I spent a year there in 1962-63, then returned for three months every summer during the next nine years. I had many friends in Ajijic and spent some wonderful times there, and shot lots of pictures. I have taken some of Mirella's pictures as well as some of her friends and relatives pictures (their's are in color) and followed each with one of my older black-and-white photos, just to show that many things have changed over the past fifty years, and many things have not.
