Me and other NOW members protest for social security in DC. President Obama created the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform by executive order, ostensibly to recommend legislation to eliminate the federal budget deficit by 2015. He named as co-chairs former Republican Senator Alan Simpson, a longtime foe of New Deal programs like Social Security, and Democrat Erskine Bowles, who advocated for risky privatization schemes in the 1990s. Although Social Security has nothing to do with the federal budget deficit, Simpson has used his position as commission co-chair to attack Social Security from the get-go. On the very day the commission was created -- before it had even begun to gather facts about the budget deficit -- Simpson told Fox News: "We are talking about Social Security." A scant four days later, he reaffirmed to CNBC: "We are going to stick with the big three [Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid]." Simpson has spent his entire time on the commission trying to convince the US public that cutting Social Security benefits will somehow help reduce the federal deficit. That simply isn't so. Social Security has nothing to do with the federal budget deficit. Its financing is completely separate from general revenues. In fact, by law, Social Security funds are not permitted to be directly spent on government operations other than its old age, survivors and disability programs. On Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the next meeting of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, O'Neill will hand deliver nearly 1500 baby bottle tops from NOW members as part of its "Tits for an Ass" campaign calling for the removal of Alan Simpson. In August, Simpson sent a petulant and insulting e-mail tirade to Executive Director Ashley Carson of the Older Women's League (OWL), comparing Social Security to "a milk cow with 320 million tits" and disparaging those who advocate on behalf of Social Security recipients as unable to "find honest work." NOW President Terry O'Neill delivered on a promise when she presented Fiscal Commission Co-Chair Alan Simpson with 1500 baby bottle tops this morning and promptly asked him to step down from the commission. After Simpson insulted those who depend on Social Security -- many of them older women, children and people with disabilities -- by referring to the program as "a milk cow with 310 million tits," NOW came up with its "Tits for an Ass" campaign. The organization put out a call to its supporters, and they responded enthusiastically with donations to help buy baby bottle nipples in bulk to give to Simpson. "We needed to send him this message in person, and we wanted to make it memorable," said O'Neill. "We can't have someone with obvious animosity toward women and seniors making important decisions on Social Security. This commission is supposed to be developing ways to reduce the national debt, which, by the way, has nothing to do with Social Security. But Mr. Simpson is bent on weakening a federal program that prevents many women retirees from living in deep poverty." Women make up the largest group of elderly who live in poverty, and a cut in Social Security or raising the retirement age will only make things worse. Throughout their lives, women on average are paid less then men; in addition, they often work at part-time jobs or take extended leave from the workforce to raise children. Alan Simpson were introduced as co-chairmen of a debt commission, which will look to reduce the federal budget deficit to 3 percent of gross domestic product in five years. Obama said they were "taking on the impossible." "They're going to try to restore reason to the fiscal debate and come up with answers," he said. The 18-member panel is to include eight Republicans, six named by GOP leaders in Congress and two by the White House. But the president's commission, issued by executive order, will be a much weaker version of the debt commission Congress recently rejected, meaning the commission's recommendations will not have the force of law. The commission is likely able to offer up only unpopular ideas -- cutting Social Security and Medicare or raising taxes -- meaning getting Congress to go along will be no picnic.
