ALEC "refocuses" under pressure as corporate sponsors drop support for the organization because of protests and boycotts. Rashad Robinson, executive director of Color of Change, refuses to be sanguine. While ALEC's old agenda may not be pushed forward, its results remain in existing voter suppression and stand your ground laws. "Unfortunately we're all left to clean up this mess," Robinson says. "We have yet another company that has dropped ALEC. ALEC is the American Legislative Exchange council, they're the group that gets business and large corporations together with state legislatures. Often times their lobbyists simply write the bills for them and then have the legislatures hand it in." If progressive organizers have their way, companies like AT&T will follow the path of Coca Cola and Kraft and pull their funding for ALEC. ALEC creates and supports legislation that promotes voter suppression across the country — a key reason why ColorofChange.org and other progressive groups are fighting back. Rashad Robinson, executive director of ColorofChange.org, talks with Jennifer Granholm about the coalition of progressive groups that will be reaching out to corporations to pull funding from ALEC. A right-wing corporate funded organization essentially wrote Minnesota's proposed constitutional amendment requiring a photo ID to vote says Minnesota Common Cause Executive Director Mike Dean. The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has written 60 bills that have been introduced into the Minnesota legislature according to a Common Cause report. That's more bills than any other state. Dean says beyond comparing the language with ALEC's model bills and what is introduced, the other evidence that these proposed laws are written by corporate lobbyists is the supposed legislative authors of the bills don't really understand them. For example, Dean points to the recently passed voter photo ID amendment. The bill's legislative authors couldn't explain or refused to explain what the proposed laws really meant. In one hearing Representative Mary Kiffmeyer defined a key phrase in her bill "substantially equivalent" as "equivalent, substantially." Dean isn't alone in his criticism. During debate on the bill Democrats repeatedly complained about Representative Kiffmeyer's refusal to directly answer questions about what the bill would do. Kiffmeyer has defended her authorship of the bill saying that she did write it. She is a member of ALEC, but downplays her membership.

Arrests, police force, and pepper spraying of peaceful protesters at the demonstration against ALEC on Wed. 11/30/11 around 9:30am. I apologize for the shitty camera work and the screaming. Couldn't help it in both cases. alecexposed.org What is ALEC??: ALEC is not a lobby; it is not a front group. It is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, behind closed doors, corporations hand state legislators the changes to the law they desire that directly benefit their bottom line. Along with legislators, corporations have membership in ALEC. Corporations sit on all nine ALEC task forces and vote with legislators to approve "model" bills. They have their own corporate governing board which meets jointly with the legislative board. Corporations fund almost all of ALEC's operations. Participating legislators, overwhelmingly conservative Republicans, then bring those proposals home and introduce them in statehouses across the land as their own brilliant ideas and important public policy innovations—without disclosing that corporations crafted and voted on the bills. ALEC boasts that it has over 1000 of these bills introduced by legislative members every year, with one in every five of them enacted into law. ALEC describes itself as a "unique," "unparalleled" and "unmatched" organization. We agree. It is as if a state legislature had been reconstituted, yet corporations had pushed the people out the door.
Laws that put more people in prison might seem like a good thing if you're for law and order. But what if you found those laws had been passed so private prisons would have more people to incarcerate and therefor make more money? That's one of the allegations laid out by a coalition of groups in Arizona who are calling attention to what the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is doing to undermine democracy in America. The groups say ALEC takes millions of dollars from corporations and uses it to get state legislatures to do their bidding, passing laws that do everything from put more people in prison to disenfranchising voters. Former State Representative John A. Loredo introduces the speakers. Speakers at the event outside the Arizona state capitol in Phoenix include members of Common Cause, People For The American Way, Center for Media and Democracy, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the Arizona AFL-CIO, and the Office and Professional Employees International Union
