Alice Delysia, 3 March 1889, Paris, France - 9 February 1979, Brighton, East Sussex, England, UK . The French actress and singer Alice Delysia was from the 1920s until her retirement in the late 1940s, one of the most exciting and alluring stars of the London stage. She first appeared in Paris at the Moulin Rouge and later at the Folies Bergere but it wasn't until 1914 that her provocative looks and glorious singing voice were spotted by the producer CBCochran who took her to London to star in a series of revues. In one revue she sang the original Noel Coward song, Poor Little Rich Girl. Her cabaret seasons at London's Cafe de Paris in the 1920s and 30s made her the toast of the town. Her songs were haunting and sometimes risque. As she descended the stairs of the Cafe de Paris singing I Like A Man, it was said that no artiste had more poise. Her gowns in shimmering blue and gold were designed by Norman Hartnell and her songs by the top composers of the day. In the Second World War and by the middle-aged Delysia toured in troop shows across North Africa for over two years. The soldiers of the 8th Army dubbed her 'the greatest trouper of them all'. In the 1950s she married and retired to Tenerife where she shunned the limelight but ocasionally received visits from old fans. On her husbands's death she moved to Brighton, in the south of England, where she was looked after by her old friend, the cabaret star and actor Douglas Byng. Her funeral in South London was attended by ...
recorded 2/2/1920 Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Day made her Broadway debut in Pom-pom in 1916. Three years later she became a major star playing the title role in Irene. Five months into the run, she departed the cast to create the role in the London production. Embraced by the London critics, she decided to remain there after the show closed and went on to become the first lady of West End musicals, with triumphs in Rose Marie, The Desert Song, and Show Boat. Day's movie career consisted of three silent films, The Grain of Dust (1918), A Romance of the Air (1918), and Children Not Wanted (1920). Day retired from acting in the 1930s. In 1960 she briefly returned to the stage in Noel Coward's Waiting in the Wings. It seems that WMG is trying to claim rights to Alice Blue Gown and possibly this recording too. However, this is a Victor recording and thus recording rights would belong to Sony and not WMG. The musical score is no longer covered by copyright law since this was written prior to 1924. I believe the date is 1919 since that would correspond to the production of the musical "Irene" from which this song comes from. I thought I would add this since WMG has put a tag on my post of "Alice Blue Gown" which I know is incorrect.
When that delightful American musical comedy star Edith Day (1896-1971) first appeared in London, at the Empire Theatre, Leicester Square, on 7 April 1920, the Daily Mail wrote: 'A theatrical star of rare brilliance has appeared and has taken by storm the hearts of a London audience.' On that occasion she was playing the leading role of Irene O'Dare in the hit musical comedy Irene, which she had created at the Vanderbilt Theatre, New York, on 18 November the previous year. The show was full of charming numbers but none more so than 'Alice Blue Gown,' which Miss Day recorded as a 10'' disc for the Victor label (45176, reissued in the UK on HMV B-1115) at the studios in Camden, New Jersey, on 2 February 1920. She recorded the song again in a slightly longer, 12'' version, with dialogue, in London for the Columbia label (F-1044) on or about 15 April 1920. The recording featured here is from John Culme's Footlight Notes Collection, as is the photograph by Foulsham & Banfield (London, 1920) of Edith Day and Pat Somerset as they appeared in Irene. I Dont Care - 2008 Polish Swedish Jazz Connection From a trombonist friend, Dymitr Markiewicz, all the way in Poland I received a film of him playing with his Polish Swedish Jazz Connection at the Golden Washboard Festival in Ilawa Poland. Several years earlier Dymitr lived in Sweden and was the trombonist of Hans Carlings New Coolings Jazzmen. He had a big influence on the early development of Hans Carlings daughters trombone playing. Both Gunhild and Gerd became fine players. Many years later Dymitr is here with a number of excellent musicians, and yes, they are Swedish and Polish playing the music in the New Orleans tradition in a city some 200 km north of Warsaw. In the band: Erik Berndalen trumpet, Mikael Cinthio clarinet, Dymitr trombone, Viktor Zydron and Pawell Tartanus banjos, Huba Olejnik bass and Wojtek Kaminski piano Here in North America we dont hear a lot from musicians from that area, but these men can stand up to most I have presented on youtube and dailymotion. Enjoy this great group.

Both Jacob (Jack) and his brother Nathanel (Nat ) had very successful and very popular bands during the 1920s and 1930s. Jack is the father of composer-conductor Neil Warner, and the grandfather of actress Julie Warner. IF YOU KNEW SUSIE (LIKE I KNOW SUSIE) From the Broadway musical "Big Boy" (1925) (Buddy G. DeSylva / Joseph Meyer) I have got a sweetie known as Susie In the words of Shakespeare she's a "wow" Though all of you may know her, too I'd like to shout right now Suzie has a perfect reputation No one ever saw her on a spree Nobody knows where Susie goes Nobody knows but me If you knew Susie, like I know Susie Oh! Oh! Oh! What a girl There's none so classy As this fair lassie Oh! Oh! Holy Moses, what a chassis We went riding, she didn't balk Back from Yonkers I'm the one that had to walk If you knew Susie, like I know Susie Oh! Oh! What a girl! If you knew Susie, like I know Susie Oh! Oh! Oh! What a girl She wears long tresses And nice tight dresses Oh! Oh! What a future she possesses Out in public How she can yawn In a parlour, you would think the war was on If you knew Susie, like I know Susie Oh! Oh! What a girl! **************************** Apparantly Jolson disliked this song, possibly because it had been badly received by Broadway audiences for the show "Big Boy", and he gave ...
