North Carolina residents are heading to the polls today to vote on a controversial amendment banning gay marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships in the state's constitution. The Courage Campaign and popular LGBT blog Joe. My. God are reporting that some residents are encountering what is described as a possible election fraud as they prepare to vote on Amendment One, which will act in addition to the state's statutory prohibition against recognition of same-sex marriage.

Follow: @SlateViral, Facebook.com/SlateVideo Watch: YouTube.com/Slatester, SlateV.com The gay marriage issue continues to heat up in the presidential race, even when the politics are local. North Carolina is voting on Amendment 1 this week, which would give legal recognition only to marriages between a man and a woman. Polls suggest the state—where a video of a man shooting a sign against the measure with a handgun recently went viral—is likely to pass the amendment. But debate over the state issue is set against a backdrop of fast-moving national opinions on marriage equality. A narrow majority of Americans support gay marriage in new polling, boosted by Democratic and Independent voters. The White House has been caught in a balancing act after Vice President Joe Biden and Education Secretary Arne Duncan recently made statements that seemed to contradict the president's "evolving" position. With a reported high number of gay Obama campaign contribution bundlers, the chorus pushing him to support marriage equality may grow. But the decision may be made by polling in the swing states the president hopes to win in 2012.

To Christians in North Carolina--the Constitution and the Bible are unified in the message of love and dignity for all people. A vote to include marriage as only one man and one woman in your constitution is a vote to discriminate against the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Be responsible citizens and Christians as you vote. Christians are not to discriminate and are to fight for justice. VOTE AGAINST AMENDMENT ONE. On May 8th, North Carolina residents will vote on Amendment One, which proposes adding a clause to the state constitution that would define marriage as being only between a man and a woman. Janie Long, director of Duke's Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Life (LGBT), opposes the amendment and is concerned about how its passage might affect Duke students and families. Long, a 1981 graduate of Duke Divinity School, has served as the director of the LGBT center since 2006. Joining her will be Duke alumnus Steven Petrow, a former president of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. Petrow has written numerous books and columns on LGBT issues. His work has appeared in The New York Times, CNN, NPR, The Huffington Post and elsewhere. In a live "Office Hours" interview on April 12, 2012, Long and Petrow discuss Amendment One and its implications. Conducting the interview is David Jarmul, Duke's associate vice president of news and communications.

This is a video that explains Why Marriage Matters. The issues and subsequent consequences surrounding the definition of marriage are much more complex than many of us may think. The threat to our state's definition of marriage is real. In fact, North Carolina is the only remaining southern state that has not protected the definition of marriage in its constitution. Don't be Fooled! In an attempt to divorce the Marriage Amendment from marriage, opponents deceptively call it "Amendment One." Do not be mistaken on Election Day. The only initiative that will appear on the ballot this May 8th is the Marriage Amendment, NOT "Amendment One." Marriage Protection Amendment: Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.
North Carolina is putting a ballot measure in the upcoming primary election to add an amendment to the state constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. This video clarifies the voting terminology, explores the deeper issues of this amendment and urges viewers to vote against the measure on May 8th. UNC-Pembroke broadcast discussion on NC Amendment One. This is entirely amateur and all of our first time in front of TV cameras. Go easy on us, guys. We were told to not swear and to keep it very "professional", so you'll notice how I tend to stumble on words a couple of times or pause to catch myself (I could be a sailor). With being held to just 30 minutes and having two commercial breaks, it's hard to really say everything you'd like to say. I wish we had more time, but sadly, we did not. Regarding the commercial breaks, I didn't know how to edit them out and didn't feel like taking the time to do that. I am sorry. Just skip through them.
