And the big difference with this years 8th round is the addition of a new judge. Singer-songwriter Kara DioGuardi joined the panel along with Idol-classics Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. Right now, America is helping to narrow down the top 36 contestants, and host Ryan Seacrest announced the show has already received a record-breaking number of contestant votes this round. The new Idol rules for 2009 are that the guy and the girl with the highest number of votes move on to the Final 12. Also making it to the next round is the the person receiving the next most votes from America. Going from 36 to 12, this is a humongous drop, with only 3 hopefuls out of 9 moving on to the next round each week. Now the numbers do actually add up because theres a show twist: its called The Wild Card. Apparently, there will be a fourth round of semifinals. The three other wild-card finalists were Jasmine Murray, the big-voiced 16-year-old high school student from Starkville, Miss.; Megan Corkrey, the quirky 22-year-old single mother from Sandy, Utah; and Matt Giraud, the soulful 23-year-old dueling piano player from Kalamazoo, Mich. The previously dismissed foursome were selected by the show's judges. Desai's last-minute selection wasn't the night's only seemingly unscripted moment. After oh-so-emotional semifinalist Tatiana Del Toro performed Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love For You," she kneeled and pleaded for a spot from the judges. Thursday night's wild-card round concluded with one of the most dramatic last-second turn-arounds in the show's history -- a decision to expand the final group from 12 to 13 to accommodate UNC-Chapel Hill student Desai. Earlier in the show, he performed Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative," earning generally positive marks from the judges. "You slayed it," Randy Jackson said, although fellow judge Simon Cowell was more measured. "You're like an enthusiastic dog," Cowell said. "Not the best singer we'll hear, but people like you." After his performance, Desai got in a shout-out to his hometown and the memory of Eve Carson, the late student-body president who was murdered a year ago Thursday. "It's been a tough day. We're all thinking of Eve, and I love you, Chapel Hill," Desai said. As the judges announced their decisions at the end of the show, Desai was pitted against Matt Giraud for the 12th and final spot. Giraud was awarded the last spot, until Cowell announced that the final group would be a top-13 this year. North Carolina's other finalist, Ricky Braddy of Elizabeth City, did not make it through.
