SPONSORED HEAD SHAVE FOR AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL campaigning on behalf of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) My name is Rhian. I became involved with Amnesty through a colleague who had worked in charity fundraising. She told me that Amnesty International did more with the money they received by donation, pound for pound, than any other charity she had ever worked with. Their actions, their stance on Human Rights and their results have constantly impressed me. For a while, I have been meaning to make a contribution more substantial than the money I have paid for membership or collected through raffles. It occured to me that I should do something which reflects the dehumanising treatment suffered by prisoners, often political prisoners who have been brutalised because of their views and not because of any unlawful behaviour, or people who have been unjustly incarcerated in unfair trials or on circumstantial evidence. So I decided to shave my head. This is quite a big thing for me. It will be strange to be bald. I'm a girl, and I'm sure it'll attract more than a few stares. Some of the comments I might hear may not be pleasant. People will almost certainly jump to conclusions when they see the state of my pate, and I'm pretty sure I won't look as attractive on a night out, especially if the lights are reflecting off my scalp. But these are very minor things, compared to what the Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) experience. Here's an extract from the Amnesty website: 'Women human ...
The UN security council is being urged to impose an immediate arms embargo on Israel and armed Palestinian factions like Hamas. Amnesty International is calling for the weapons blockade, after an investigation into the war on Gaza concluded both sides may be guilty of commiting war crimes. Israel and Hamas are accused of deliberately putting civilians at risk. But as Jacky Rowland explains, neither side is prepared to accept Amnesty's report

Support the Optional Protocol on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights www.protectallhumanrights.org Billions of women, men and children face levels of deprivation that undermine the right to live with dignity. Hunger, homelessness and preventable disease are not inevitable social problems or simply the result of natural disasters they are a human rights scandal. Even in rich countries, there are people who do not have access to education, health care and housing. Governments often blame a lack of resources, but, in fact, many people face systematic discrimination, while those on the margins of society are often overlooked altogether. The international community has stood by while individual governments have ignored the human rights of millions of people. International financial institutions have imposed conditions on countries that have led to reduced access to education and health care for people living in poverty. Elsewhere, those large-scale development projects devoid of any regard for human rights have resulted in widespread homelessness. In many countries, governments do not regulate corporations to ensure that they meet their human rights responsibilities. They allow pollution of the environment and extreme exploitation to continue unchecked. Violations of economic, social and cultural rights are not a matter of inadequate resources; they are a matter of justice. All human rights are inter-linked and the denial of one leads to denial of others where there is no ...

A advert that highlights human rights with John Lennon's song "Imagine" as the soundtrack (re-recorded with permission).
Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights to be respected and protected for everyone. We believe human rights abuses anywhere are the concern of people everywhere. So, outraged by human rights abuses but inspired by hope for a better world, we work to improve people's lives through campaigning and international solidarity. Our mission is to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated. Our members and supporters exert influence on governments, political bodies, companies and intergovernmental groups. Activists take up human rights issues by mobilizing public pressure through mass demonstrations, vigils and direct lobbying as well as online and offline campaigning. We have more than 2.2 million members and subscribers in more than 150 countries and regions and we coordinate this support to act for justice on a wide range of issues. www.amnesty.org

Break the Horizon (translated version) I open my eyes and the sun is awakening I see the light, but I can't escape the thunder of the night This scream from a thousand throats like a desperate prayer, Which is silenced to a fearful plead for taking the misery away That nobody wants to see -- the horizon turned into an image Behind it rages the pain, but right here it remains quiet Because behind our horizon arise the few in power, The guardians of corruption, who despise the weak By spinning webs of crime around their speeches of lies And the people are forced to accept their fate Just like Akbar Ganji, journalist from Iran, Who fought for a freedom they would never grant him, Because freedom of speech means potential resistance Against a government that burns in words like in gasoline So instead, they burned Ganjis sun and banned all hope into exile By sending him away for six years of jail And tonight they are silently dying Our sleep is the blood where they lie in And I know the sun won't be arising Until we open our eyes and break the ...
