Amy Palmiero-Winters of Hicksville, New York, is a long-distance runner whose awards and trophies are hard to count. This year alone, she has won or placed in several big races, some more than 200 kilometers, and lasting more than 24 hours -- and she was named the top amateur athlete in America by the Amateur Athletic Union. Her achievements are all the more striking, given that Palmiero-Winters has what most would consider a major disability -- though she herself would disagree with that. Carolyn Weaver has more.

Amputees from across the country came to Stoke Mandeville at the weekend to take part in the annual Amputee Games. The inspiring event was put on to encourage people who have lost limbs to get back into sport and has often proved an excellent way to unearth some hidden talent. Last year, Aylesbury's sitting volleyball star Charlie Walker tried the sport for the first time and is now part of the Team GB squad who are expected to line up for the nation in the 2012 Paralympic Games. Talent scouts from the Paralympic Association turned out to run the rule over competitors as Team GB look to strengthen their squads with the games now less than two years away.

An armless Chinese man has wowed TV audiences in his homeland with a flawless piano performance - using only his toes. Liu Wei appeared on China's Got Talent and stunned viewers with a faultless recital of the classic Mariage D'amour. The 23-year-old lost both arms when he was 10 after he touched a high-voltage wire during a game of hide-and-seek. He said it had been his "destiny" to perform on the show. "For people like me, there were only two options," he added. "One was to abandon all dreams, which would lead to a quick, hopeless death. "The other was to struggle without arms to love an outstanding life." When he was 18, Mr Liu decided he wanted to be a professional musician and taught himself how to play the piano in secret. He persevered and developed his own style after his teacher quit, saying it was impossible for anyone to play with their toes. He got a standing ovation on China's Got Talent after the emotional performance and advanced to the next round of the competition.

ATLANTA - One woman who lost both of her hands and legs is inspiring others and warning all of us about the potentially deadly disease that attacked her. She was diagnosed with a blood poisoning called sepsis, which doctors say is more common that you might think.

"We would talk about anything and everything, solve all the world's problems," Hatzo says. But never could they have conjured the story line that has Palmiero-Winters, now a 37-year-old divorced mom, still running in the late-night hours, her two sleeping children at home with a babysitter, her prosthetic lower left leg and determination carrying her beyond limits anyone would dare suggest. At 9 am on Jan. 1, Palmiero-Winters finished first overall in the "Run to the Future" 24-hour race in Glendale, Ariz. - and crossed a barrier. By covering 130.4 miles in a day's time, she became the first amputee to qualify for a US national track and field team. She will compete in the 24-hour world championships May 13-14 in Brive, France, with 11 teammates. "What it means to me goes beyond what I could express with words," says Palmiero-Winters, who recently won the 2009 Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete. What it means to sports history is that Palmiero-Winters has done what eluded South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee who tried to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics. "It's sort of like Jackie Robinson breaking the racial barrier in professional baseball," says Roy Pirrung ...
