First Segment of WIN News Mildura on 30/6/2010 (6:30pm). This was the day that Analog TV was switched off in the region (at 9:00am). To mark the occasion, the bulletin was presented from a balcony in the centre of Mildura, and the first segment was dedicated to reports about the switch, including historic footage from STV 8 (now WIN), reports on new transmitters and the VAST satelitte service for remote areas. This really IS the end of WNBC's analog broadcasts on channel 4 in New York. The station ceased regular analog programming on the channel on June 12, 2009 at 12:30PM. For the next 2 weeks, a loop of DTV instructional videos played, then on June 26 at 10:58 AM, it ended like this. This is the last 2 minutes, picking up with the end of the last cycle of the NAB's DTV video. What followed was some black, some bars, a variation of a 1970's WNBC-TV test pattern, a brief logo montage, then analog hash. Note that there's no audio with the bars, black or the TP. Other than the server which played back the videos, there were no devices in the nightlight equipment chain that could generate audio. This is the extended version, (the shorter, final 1-minute version is also available here) which shows in real time the transition from nightlight to GOODBYE.
A Brief Review: 68 Years of NTSC for CBS CBS's first television broadcasts were experimental, often only for one hour a day, and reaching a limited area in and around New York City (over station W2XAB channel 2, later called WCBW and finally WCBS-TV). The FCC began licensing commercial television stations on July 1, 1941; [on that day, they issued a license] to WCBW, (now WCBS). On Feb 12 1946, the newly completed AT&T inter-city coaxial cable was inaugurated with an experimental broadcast of Lincoln Memorial Services from Washington DC to NBC, CBS, and DuMonts stations in New York. This date is commonly referred to as the birth date of television network broadcasting. The term "chain broadcasting" was used, as the stations were linked together in long chains along the east coast. But as the networks expanded westward, the interconnected stations formed great networks of connected affiliate stations. By 1951, the four networks stretched coast-to-coast, carried on the new microwave radio relay network of AT&T Long Lines. In 1987, cross-country microwave radio relays were replaced by Fixed Service Satellites. Some terrestrial radio relays remained in service for regional connections. In 2000, satellite capacity and quality were increased with the transition to digital modulation. Recorded with two 20 year old JVC HR-S10000u SVHS VCR's and two 3 year old HD capable JVC HM-DT100s DVHS VCR's. HD portions recorded with a Mitsubishi HD-6000 DVR. Channel 2, 4, 5, 28, 50 were recorded on the HR-S10000u's and a set top antenna. Channel 7, 9, 11, 13 were recorded on the HM-DT100s's and an antenna on my balcony. The audio buzz in the KNBC portion and the crease in the KTLA portion tell me the two 10000u's are ready to retire if it wasn't obvious before. I had to remove the song that KTLA played during their credits REM-Its The End Of The World As We Know It, because after the first attempt YouTube muted the whole 10 min clip. I didn't realize it would be a problem as it was only about 45 sec of the song.
