See this TripWow and more at tripwow.tripadvisor.com Mexico "We flew from Quito to Mexico City to catch up with friends and head toward the Carribean Coast, exploring ancient sites along the way including those of the Teolihuaca, Zapotec, Aztec and Mayan civilisations. After studying the guide book Rob worked out that if take five consecutive night buses and view ancient sities by day that we'll be able to see everything. These civilisations flourished between 1200 BC and 1519 AD. Mexico was colonised by the Spanish in 1521 and so has a lot of similarities with South America, for example, language, religon and cute colonial towns. The main difference between Mexico and South America is the food. Mexicans love their tacos, fajitas, tortillas and chillies, and so did we... apparently in Tabasco, Mexicans drink the local sauce straight out of the bottle! When we arrived in Mexico City we took a taxi straight to Ant´s house, a work friend of mine from London. When we reached their house their leaving party was already in full swing (Ant and Gareth are moving to teach in an international school in Vietnam at the end of June). So we chucked down our racksacks and hit the party with a nice cup of tea and plate full of tacos! Its been a long time since we ran that marathon and we are out of shape! INTERESTING FACT: Mexico city is one of the largest cities in the world, with around 25 MILLION including the surrounding suburbs (imagine, the population of Canada is 33 million). It was built on an empty lake bed, and has sunken 10 meters in the last 100 years, causing considerable structural damage! SORE FEET AND BAD MEAT Mexico City, one of the biggest cities in the world...and Daniela is setting us free in it. Are we ready to spread our wings? Well, the luxury apartment that Daniela's friend Marylu lent us for 3 days certainly made the transition a little easier! We had mixed feelings about Mexico city. On one hand, it was very busy and very dirty, you could literally taste the smog and pollution. Recycling is unfathomable and street vendors line every street. On the other hand, there were areas with amazing colonial architecture and beautiful churches, and of course, the city is rich with pre-colonial Mayan and Aztec history too. Tears ago someone mistakenly assumed it to be an old Aztec ruin. Not so. It is another ancient Anasazi village. If I had not, just the day before, visited the ruins in Chaco Canyon these relics would be very interesting. However, having spent the prior day walking through Pueblo Bonito, this village was a little disappointing. Aztec ruins is easier to get to, therefore it receives more visitors, but Chaco Canyon, in its isolation, offers a stronger feel for the mysterious old Indian culture. Moving west through Flora Vista to Farmington, then north to La Plata (silver) and the Colorado state line put me closer to Mesa Verde National Park. Farther along I passed through Red Mesa and a Ute Indian reservation before coming into Hesperus, where I came upon a picture perfect view up the tree-lined La Plata River framed by snow-capped mountains in the distance. It was one of those scenes you find on a post card or calendar. Slightly west of Mancos a road leads to the top of Mesa Verde (green table). Today we were looking to move on but with so much still to see in the city we decided to stay another day and headed back to Zocalo square slowly on my behalf... Firstly we went to find what was described in the guide book as the 'oldest hospital in Latin America.' With nothing else said about it I expected some ancient and beautiful building of wonder, but instead we found it consisted of what can only be described as a 60's looking British building of concrete and metal, Yuk! So we headed on taking a photo just for the joy of it! As it was the weekend the square was really buzzing with locals and to be honest, seeing many western tourists has been quite a rarity to date in Mexico City. Lots was going on to add to a great atmosphere, people in traditional dress consisting of native American style Indian dress with the most amazing feather head dresses, dancing to loud banging drums and chanting! We sat in the square whilst locals were having what could only be described as some traditional style religious healing ceremony where a copper pot of burning herbs and weeds were circled all over their bodies whilst chanting something to them, followed by a large shell being used to blow into creating ...

The Carnival cruise ship valor's theme is heroes and heroism, and I liked it. It was just my style and just what I needed to be on during the elections this fall. Yes, I missed the big elections, but of course I voted, by mail. I was given a chance to go on this cruise for free, so I took it; who wouldn't. Can you imagine a cruise ship with American flags on the floors, the stairs, the bar countertops etc? Can you imagine in this day and age a ship with sculptured images of George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, and other remarkable Americans up above you surrounding some of the public rooms? A ship where as you walk down the stairs there is, between the decks, first a painting of Abraham Lincoln and then one of Neil Armstrong walking on the moon? Well you don't have to imagine it, all that you have to do is to book yourself a cruise on the Valor and you can see it all for yourself. And for those of you who love to smoke an occasional cigar, on the Atlantic deck there is the Winston cigar bar where you can feel free to smoke cigars to your hearts content. This huge bar stretches the entire width of the ship and has more than enough seating for all. It has leather seats and real solid wood tables with pictures on the walls of Winston Churchill and others from the WWII era.
