TIME what makes us tick? is it our inner clock, or are we part of a gigantic clockwork regulating our daily moves? Observed on a human scale, the very basic rhythm of every day is sunset and sunrise, we go in to bed and out of bed. A rhythm, so elementary and universal and at the same time so intimate. This is an impression of Sync' by Max Hattler and 'Bedrooms' bij Nelleke Koop with music by Dennis van Tilburg. These were part of the 'Time, what makes us tick?' installation in the Open Mind series of Pavlov E-Lab, presented on the Noorderzon Performing Arts festival 2010. In this edition Max and Nelleke collaborated with chronobiologist Martha Merrow and physicist Eric Bergshoeff in their mutual exploration of the theme of Time.

Computer Science Teachers Association Computer Science & Information Technology Symposium 2010 July 13, 2010 Design and Implementation of Computer Science Teaching Endorsements Presented by Suzanne Hambrusch & Rich Schlesinger The session describes efforts at Purdue and KSU on the implementation of the NCATE CS teacher prep standards. The CS Department at Purdue, in collaboration with its School of Education, is currently developing a Purdue-only "endorsement." Indiana does not have any explicit computer science licensing rules. The endorsement will be used to start a dialog with the state about whether Indiana might want to establish licensing rules. Purdue's effort includes developing modules on computational thinking for education courses and developing a CS methods course. KSU saw the need for a computer science teacher certification program as a natural extension of its math & science teacher preparation programs. KSU became a leader in the effort to create a state certification in Georgia and, subsequently, has become the first state approved provider of a CS teacher preparation program. The CS department is now actively working to encourage Education majors to also pursue the certification. For more information, please see csta.acm.org
Computer Science Teachers Association Computer Science & Information Technology Symposium 2010 July 13, 2010 Computing for Everyone Presented by Richard Ladner We start with an introduction to successful computer scientists with disabilities. Then we review various access technologies that permit students with disabilities to participate in the classroom and lab. We summarize the trends in accessibility research which will open up even more avenues for students to fully participate in class. We review some strategies for universal design of curriculum and activities that allow all students to participate regardless of disability. We introduce the Access Computing Alliance that has the goal of increasing the participation and success of students with disabilities in computing fields. AP Biology - Lecture 5.1 - Kingdom Plantae Review
This presentation seeks to help all web developers on campus understand why they should keep accessibility in mind when creating their applications. The panel discussion, moderated by Berkeley CIO Shel Waggener, features IST--Web Applications Manager Bill Allison and College of Letters & Science Director of Computing Tom Holub, two campus IT leaders who have been tireless accessibility advocates. The panel also features Jon Mires, an accessibility expert with the Center for Accessible Technology, a local non-profit organization that, among other things, provides consulting services to corporations, libraries, and government entities on creating accessible websites. The panel members each talk about their experience creating accessible web content and the subsequent results. Presented by Webnet webnet.berkeley.edu and WebAccess webaccess.berkeley.edu

Teri Manolio, MD, Ph.D. Director, Office of Population Genomics, NHGRI. Genetics for Epidemiologists: Applications of Human Genomics to Population Sciences, was a short course for investigators and trainees in the field of epidemiology and related population-based sciences. It was conducted by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) on May 13-14, 2008 at Northwestern University in Chicago. The goal of Genetics for Epidemiologists (GFE) was to familiarize epidemiologists and population-based researchers with recent developments in the theory and methods of human genetics that might be applied to the study of the distribution, natural history and etiology of diseases in populations. The course consisted of eight one-hour lectures and focused on the interface between genetics and epidemiology. Emphasis was on the application of modern human genome analysis methodologies to studies of human populations through the design, conduct, analysis, and interpretation of studies which effectively answer the epidemiologic question of interest. GFE is co-sponsored by the Office of Population Genomics, NHGRI, and the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. These videocasts are provided as an educational tool for epidemiologic investigators interested in learning more about applying genomics to their work. More: www.genome.gov

Review of free-response questions from the AP Biology exam.
Review of free-response questions from the AP Biology exam.
www.mindbites.com In this lesson, Professor Wolfe provides a complete overview of the replication of DNA, beginning with its structure. DNA has a double-helix structure of nucleotides, which made-up of a sugar, a phosphate, and a base. The strands are antiparallel, meaning they run in opposite directions, known as the 5' strand and the 3' strand. DNA replicates by the semi-conservative method of replication. Professor Wolfe explains how DNA polymerase only reads in one direction, from 3' to 5', and therefore creates ""replication bubbles"" in order to replicate the DNA twice as fast. This creates leading and lagging strands, which require RNA primer and Okazaki fragments added to the lagging strand in order for the process to work properly. At the end of the strands, which lack the free OH molecule needed to complete the process, telomeres are used to protect against a loss of information. This lesson is perfect for review for a CLEP test, mid-term, final, summer school, or personal growth! Taught by Professor George Wolfe, this lesson was selected from a broader, comprehensive course, Biology. This course and others are available from Thinkwell, Inc. The full course can be found at www.thinkwell.com The full course covers evolution, ecology, inorganic and organic chemistry, cell biology, respiration, molecular genetics, photosynthesis, biotechnology, cell reproduction, Mendelian genetics and mutation, population genetics and mutation, animal systems and homeostasis ...
www.mindbites.com To understand transcription and translation, Professor Wolfe states that you must first understand the "central dogma" that DNA makes RNA and RNA makes proteins. But how is this infromation communicated? Through transcription, which is the process where DNA information is coded into RNA, and translation which is the process of converting the mRNA molecule by ribosome into polypeptide strand. This process happens in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, but in Eukaryotic cells translation takes place outside of the nucleus. Professor Wolfe also discusses the three different types of RNA, mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA. He explains rRNA and how is used to help translate the mRNA.
