A rash of swastikas recently appeared at UC Berkeley. A multi-cultural group of students and community members decided to mobilize in solidarity against hate speech on campus and organized the "Anti-Semitism is Hate" rally. UC-BERKELEY RALLY and MARCH* 12:00PM Wednesday (same day), May 13th, at Sproul Plaza, UC-Berkeley *This protest is endorsed by BAMN, AFSCME Local 3299, Xinaxtli, SOJA, NNIRR, ISO ============================================ At 4:30pm on Wednesday, April 29, two members of the UCPD entered Clark Kerr Campus Dining Commons. They spoke with a manager, who upon their request summoned Jesús Gutiérrez, a food service worker and AFSCME 3299 member, to his office and left him alone with the agents. (This same UCB manager, when approached by BAMN, denied knowing Jesús.) The officers arrested Jesús, took him to jail, and called ICE. He is now under ICE custody at Santa Rita Jail. No decision of deportation has been made, and he will have a court hearing May 21st. THIS IS CAUSE FOR ALARM! We must make clear that it is not acceptable for UC police or ICE to kidnap anyone from our campus. They want to send a message to every immigrant student and worker that they are not welcome at UC-Berkeley or in America.
