Presented by Yan and Justin! -- NASA HD Launch Engineering ((720P)) -- Ares IX launched on October 28, 2009 at 11:30 EDT (15:30 UTC) from Kennedy Space Center LC-39B, successfully completing a brief test flight. The vehicle's first stage ignited at T-0 seconds and Ares IX lifted off from Launch Complex 39B. The first stage separated from the upper stage simulator and parachuted into the Atlantic Ocean roughly 150 miles (240 km) downrange of the launch site. The maximum altitude of the rocket was not immediately known, but had been expected to be 28 miles (45 km). Prior to the flight there had been some concern among NASA scientists and among Ares critics and skeptics that the thrust oscillation would prove too violent for human astronauts to safely ride an Ares rocket. NASA Watch revealed that the first stage Solid Rocket Booster of the Ares I could create high vibrations during the first few minutes of ascent. The vibrations are caused by sudden acceleration pulses due to thrust oscillations inside the first stage. NASA admitted that this problem is very severe, rating it four out of five on a risk scale. NASA was very confident it could solve the problem, referring to a long history of successful problem solving. NASA officials have known about the problem since fall 2007, stating in a press release that they had wanted to solve it by March 2008. According to NASA, analysis of the data and telemetry from the Ares IX flight showed that vibrations from thrust oscillation ...

An aerial video crew observed the October 28, 2009 Ares IX test flight from a Cessna Skymaster aircraft positioned approx. 10 nautical miles away from the vehicle at an altitude of 12000 feet. The videographer used a gyro-stabilized high-definition camera system mounted to the outside of the aircraft to capture this spectacular footage which provides extremely valuable engineering data, and imagery of the recovery sequence in rarely-seen detail. Ares IX is the first flight test of the Constellation Program and provides NASA an early opportunity to gather critical data during vehicle ascent and during booster deceleration and recovery. Nasa Ares 1 Test Launch Camera Set 2 October 28 2009.
nasa's Ares IX rocket lifted off on Oct. 28 Launch Complex 39B at nasa's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a two-minute powered flight. The time from launch until splash down of the rocket's booster stage nearly 150 miles down range was approximately six minutes. The launch marks the first time in nearly three decades that NASA has successfully tested a new rocket design at the same complex used for the Apollo and space shuttle programs.
Two days after NASA launched a test model of its Ares 1 rocket, the flight's mission manager confirmed the first stage descended to the Atlantic Ocean on just one fully functioning parachute, damaging the booster as it splashed into the Atlantic Ocean harder than expected. All three main parachutes initially unfurled to a partially deployed, or reefing, position as planned. But one chute subsequently deflated and another developed difficulty going to a fully deployed position.

NASA's Ares IX test rocket lifted off Oct. 28, 2009, at 11:30 am EDT from Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a two-minute powered flight. The flight test lasted about six minutes from its launch from the newly modified Launch Complex 39B until splashdown of the rocket's booster stage nearly 150 miles downrange. The 327-foot-tall Ares IX test vehicle produced 2.6 million pounds of thrust to accelerate the rocket to nearly 3 g's and Mach 4.76, just shy of hypersonic speed. It capped its easterly flight at a suborbital altitude of 150000 feet after the separation of its first stage, a four-segment solid rocket booster. Parachutes deployed for recovery of the booster and the solid rocket motor, which were recovered at sea and will be towed back to Florida by the booster recovery ship, Freedom Star, for later inspection. The simulated upper stage and Orion crew module, and the launch abort system will not be recovered. The flight test is expected to provide NASA with an enormous amount of data that will be used to improve the design and safety of the next generation of American spaceflight vehicles, which could again take humans beyond low Earth orbit. ** Downloaded with permission from nasa.gov **

www.euronews.net NASA successfully launched its Ares 1-X rocket today from the Kennedy Space Centre, in Florida. Teamwork Brings About Successful Ares IX Launch Courtesy NASA: Wed, 28 Oct 2009 02:18:57 PM EDT Outstanding teamwork was the theme of the Ares IX postlaunch news conference as the successful flight test was discussed. "I can't say enough about this team," said Doug Cooke, associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "They've been together probably a little over three years now, and they went from a concept to flying this vehicle in that period of time, which is the first time this has been done by a human spaceflight team in a long time." Referring to the weather, which was the only issue of the day, Constellation Program Manager Jeff Hanley said, "We were ready when Mother Nature was ready, and we took our opportunity and what a great outcome. We're very proud of the result." "It was a spectacular day," said Bob Ess, Ares IX mission manager. "The vehicle flew even better than we expected." "It is just a fantastic day," said Launch Director Ed Mango. "The team really excelled. I can't say enough about the folks who worked together to go make this thing happen. It was a great team, and as you can tell, it was a great vehicle." Amid mounting questions and debate about the future of US human spaceflight, the world's tallest rocket was successfully launched Wednesday on a $445 million test flight for nasa's moon program. The 327-foot-tall Ares 1-X rocket blasted off at 11:30 am EDT (1530 GMT) Wednesday, clearing the tower at launch pad 39B in six seconds and steering east from the Kennedy Space Center. The solid-fueled rocket darted through low-level cumulus clouds a few moments later, flying into the upper atmosphere before running out of fuel at 130000 feet two minutes after liftoff.
