Asha Parekh (October 2, 1942) was one of the top female stars in Hindi films from 1959 to 1973 and is said to have performed in more hit films than any other heroine.
Asha Parekh was born into a middle-class Gujarati household on October 2, 1942 in Bangalore, Karnataka to a Hindu father and Muslim mother. Since she was an only child, she became the centre of her parents' lives. Her mother enrolled her in Indian classical dance classes at an early age and Asha excelled at dancing to the point where she performed at stage shows and private functions. She started her career as a child artiste under the screen name Baby Asha Parekh in the film Aasmaan (1952). Famed film director Bimal Roy saw her dance at a stage function and cast her at the tender age of twelve in Baap Beti (1954). Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki is a 1978 Indian film directed by Raj Khosla and Sudesh Issar. It's about a man (Vijay Anand) in love with his mistress (Asha Parekh) but is married to a strong woman (Nutan). The mistress dies after giving birth to a son, and the wife raises him along with her own son. When they grow up, the mistress's son (Vinod Khanna ) and the wife's son become adversaries. The film became a huge hit and was the recipient of the 1978 Filmfare Best Movie Award. Nutan won the Filmfare Best Actress Award.
The title song sung by Lata Mangeshkar became an instant classic.
As a daku, Vinod Khanna's role gave him visibility and made him a star. Dharmendra plays a reformed criminal who helps a one armed retired army man protect a village from the dacoits. Asha Parekh played Dharmendra's love interest. However, it was supporting actress Laxmi Chayya who stole the film by dancing circles around Dharmendra and Asha to the evergreen hit "Maar diya jaaye ya chhod diya jaaye, bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye". As the audience holds its collective breath, the sexy vamp cuts the ropes that bind the hero’s hands after she has drugged the villains.
The film is particularly noted for a rural setting, and it became a super hit, taking second place at the box office for 1971. It is also said to have many elements that inspired one of the box office champs of all time, Sholay(1975).
The climax fights are still remembered for the realism and are very convincing although a single man is fighting a horde of bandits.
