The flood began when heavy rains pounded the central basin of the Mississippi in the summer of 1926. By September, the Mississippi's tributaries in Kansas and Iowa were swollen to capacity. On New Year's Day of 1927, the Cumberland River at Nashville topped levees at 56. 2 feet (17 m), a level that remains a record to this day, even exceeding the devastating 2010 floods. On April 15, 1927 15 inches (380 mm) of rain fell in 18 hours. This rain caused flooding which overtook the levees causing the Mounds Landing to break with more than double the water volume of Niagara Falls. The Mississippi River broke out of its levee system in 145 places and flooded 27000 square miles (70000 km2). This water flooded an area 50 miles wide and more than 100 miles long. The area was inundated up to a depth of 30 feet (10 m). The flood caused over $400 million in damages and killed 246 people in seven states. The flood affected Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. Arkansas was hardest hit, with 14% of its territory covered by floodwaters. Thankfully, the Chestnut Springs lake and its drainage system held up! The drain into this creek is sometimes dry or trickling - check out how much water was emptying out of our lake the day the rain let up!
My husband parked on top of hill and had to walk through the rain and flood coming home from work doing the flood in Atlanta, GA on 09/21/2009. We are still smiling and loving God and each other.

2009 Flood at my house in Morningside/Virginia Highlands (Atlanta, GA). Our driveway is the lowest point in the neighborhood, so 90% of the dirty a** Atlanta rain water in our neighborhood washed into our driveway and house!

11 Alive News Broadcast of Home on fire and Fire Truck submerged in water. Update: Flooding cost Cobb County firefighters a truck. The firefighters were called Monday to a burning home on Fire Oaks Court. The firefighters were trying to put out the blaze when, officials said, flood waters quickly rose, forcing firefighters to seek higher ground and flooding the truck. None of the firefighters were hurt. According to the Cobb County Fire Department, the truck, which was made by Pierce, was purchased in 2000 for $317000. Officials said it will cost about $450000 to replace the vehicle.
