Volver

Midmorning day 14 we were rounding Cape Sable, Florida. It is part of the National Wildlife Florida Everglades Park system. Heading south outside in the Atlantic Ocean sailing parallel with the keys, is tricky. There are numerous shallows and shoals to avoid. And what we termed "Sea Mines", Stone Crab trap, floating fishing buoys. Upon rounding both points lower and then upper Cape Sable, the wind direction would change due to our course change. No longer would we be "head to wind", and could put out our sails, for that extra boost in speed, and conserve on fuel. There are no fuel stops once you enter into the Gulf of Mexico past the Key heading north for miles and miles. Outside in the Atlantic, many of the markers that aid on navigating these waters are only day markers. Very few of them are also lit for night navigation. Nevertheless we used our electronic charts to safely make our passage through this section of the keys, at an average depth of 12 feet. We officially entered the Gulf of Mexico at 9:15 am Monday morning as predicted when plotted our course from Port Ft Lauderdale inlet. This course took us under a 65 foot bridge connecting Fiesta Key from the south to another Lower Matecombe Key to the north. The average depth then changed to 8 feet. There were just as many Stone Crab trap floating buoys to dodge here, as there had been paralleling the keys outside in the Atlantic.
