Two Imams kicked off a Charlotte-bound plane say they're not surprised by the incident, but organizers at a conference the men were headed to say they're disappointed this type of discrimination still happens so long after Sept. 11, 2001. Mohamed Zaghloul and Masudur Rahman boarded the plane in Memphis Friday after going through the usual security screenings in the Memphis airport. That included initial TSA screens and an additional scan at their gate. They boarded their plane, which pulled away from the gate, and then returned. The two religious leaders were asked to get off the plane for additional screenings, after which the pilot refused to let them return. They were put on another flight to Charlotte. Zaghloul and Rahman were headed to Charlotte for a conference about Islamophobia -- the "fear of Islam." "It sort of punctuates for the attendees that this is a serious issue," said Corey Saylor of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights group for Muslims. CAIR has asked the Department of Justice to investigate the incident. The airline, Delta contract carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines, is also investigating. They apologized Friday for any inconvenience the pilot caused. At the conference, one of the organizers called the incident "surprising." Dr. Eltayeb Abuelyaman said participants in the conference are disappointed something like this would happen so long after 9/11. "There should be a reason for anything like this to happen," he said, "and we ...
An airline is investigating the removal of two imams from a flight headed to North Carolina, ostensibly because passengers felt uncomfortable with their presence of the pair -- both clad in Islamic attire. The incident occurred Friday on an Atlantic Southeast Airlines flight from Tennessee to North Carolina and it involved Masudur Rahman and Mohamed Zaghloul were wearing traditional Muslim dress, CNN affiliate WCNC reported. The two -- who hold high religious positions in the Muslim community -- were headed to North Carolina for a conference on prejudice against Muslims, or Islamaphobia. The meeting is sponsored by the North American Imams Federation. Rahman, who is a professor at the University of Memphis, told the affiliate that the incident reminded him of the prejudice Rosa Parks faced during the civil rights movement. "That history I found today in that plane, and it shouldn't happen with any other person," he said. Atlantic Southeast Airlines, which operated the flight, said the incident is under investigation, and apologized "for any inconvenience that this may have caused." Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the civil rights group Council on American-Islamic Relations, told CNN the two men contacted his office and said they were told that passengers were uncomfortable with them on the flight. "They went through security, even went through secondary security, and got on the plane, were taxiing out," he said. But then, they were taxied back, Hooper said. "TSA came on and ...
Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 529, registration N256AS, was an Embraer Brasilia aircraft that crashed near Carrollton, Georgia on August 21, 1995 while on a flight from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport in Gulfport, Mississippi. Nine of the 29 passengers and crew on board eventually died due to injuries suffered in the accident.

Flight 529 left the ramp area at Atlanta at 12:10, and took off at 12:23. At 12:43:25 and climbing through 18100 feet, a thud was heard which the co-pilot described as sounding like a baseball bat striking an aluminum trash can. One of the blades of the propeller on the left engine had failed and the entire assembly had become dislodged, deforming the engine nacelle and distorting the wing's profile. Although the EMB 120 is designed to fly with one engine simply malfunctioning, the distortion of the engine resulted in excessive drag and loss of lift on the left side of the aircraft, causing it to rapidly lose altitude. The captain and co-pilot initially tried to return to Atlanta for an emergency landing, but the rapid descent resulted in them being diverted to West Georgia Regional Airport. Unfortunately, the airplane was unable to stay in the air that long and the pilots began searching for an open space to make a crash landing on the plane's belly. At 12:52:45 the airplane struck the tops of the trees and crashed into a field near Carrollton.
On 21 August 1995, the left-side engine on Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 529 partly tore itself from its mounting creating excessive drag which caused the aircraft to fall out of the sky killing nine people. A propeller, damaged by metal fatigue, caused the initial engine failure.

He is credited with saving the lives of more than 60 people during a heart-stopping emergency landing at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport when the plane's landing gear failed to work properly. Meet America's newest hero -- Capt. Jack Conroyd. Conroyd and his co-pilot Larkin Newby were identified as the pilots of the Atlantic Southeast Airlines flight 4951 who executed an emergency crash landing on a JFK runway Saturday night, a senior Port Authority told ABC News. None of the 64 passengers on board the CRJ 900 twin-engine jet were injured. Conroyd declined to discuss his heroics when reached by ABC News today, and indicated any comments would have to wait until an investigation of what happened is concluded. Atlantic Southeast Airlines is "extremely proud of the crew's actions," ASA spokesman Jerek Deem said. The spokesman said its own internal investigation team was working with the National Transportation Safety Board. Conroyd is in line to become the most celebrated pilot since Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger landed his crippled jetliner on the Hudson River in January 2009. Sullenberger applauded Conroyd's landing, telling the New York Daily News, "I commend the crew for ensuring a successful outcome for everyone on board." Conroyd's performance was also hailed by his neighbors in Lake Mary, Fla. "He's great. He's a real nice guy," said Bill Faulkner who has lived across the street from the pilot since 1989. "It's pretty remarkable... You have no idea who you ...

www.baumhedlundlaw.com - NTSB investigators are focusing their attention on faulty propeller blades as the possible cause of the crash of Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA) Flight 529 which crashed on August 21, 1995 in Carrollton, Georgia. The propeller blade which broke up in flight is one of the same type of blades, Hamilton Standard models 14F and 14SF, being targeted in three separate investigations of in flight failures. These blades are commonly used on commuter planes worldwide. The interviewer questioned aviation crash attorney and pilot, John Greaves, about the blades and the ASA crash. Mr. Greaves believes that the FAA is tardy and theyre a day late and a dollar short in their response to these problems, and said that the traveling public does have something to be concerned about here. Baum Hedlund represented five victims from this ASA crash.

AUGUSTA, Ga.---Some Augusta kids and their parents spent the evening with a young woman -- someone who succeeded despite odds and landed on a page in history. ASA Pilot Stephanie Grant visited the Macedonia Baptist Church to speak to a group of youngsters about reaching for the skies. So many people believe that our inner city youth is doomed - but if any of them listened to first officer Stephanie Grant's words that won't be the case. She is an example to follow. She's small in stature but she's made already made a huge accomplishment in history. That's why Stephanie Grant - shares her story. Her message - dream big - and big things can happen. "If you have a dream and you go after it, you actually have something to shoot for," says Grant. Back in February she made history when she along with three other African American women piloted an ASA flight from Atlanta to Nashville. They were the nation's first all black all female flight crew. Atlantic Southeast Airlines has three black female pilots. Only one has made captain so far Stephanie Grant - could be next. A member of the Macedonia Baptist Church invited Grant to speak to the room full of impressionable minds. Grant lived in Augusta for a year - for military training but her roots are deep here. It was during that year her relationship with her father strengthened. He along with so many other family members in Augusta shine with pride. Grant along with another African American pilot spoke of their experiences and ...
