YDreams augmented-reality platform supports depth-sensing cameras. These types of cameras make it possible to pinpoint the 3D position of the users (it supports multiple users) and objects in the environment, allowing for a true marker less augmented reality experience. The virtual objects added in the video stream react to the user as well as the real objects´ positions and movements. Unlike similar applications that use 2D cameras, this one is not sensitive to light changes, camera movements and noisy backgrounds. This is a simple demo to exemplify the user experience.

The latter half of the 20th century saw the built environment merged with media space, and architecture taking on new roles related to branding, image and consumerism. Augmented reality may recontextualise the functions of consumerism and architecture, and change in the way in which we operate within it. A film produced for my final year Masters in Architecture, part of a larger project about the social and architectural consequences of new media and augmented reality.

Studio B teamed with Adobe and John Mayer to create the worlds first Augmented Reality music video. Studio B shot and keyed the green screen footage using the new Apple ProRes 444 codec. Flash Augmented Reality (FLAR) is a way of creating a digital hologram in 3D space by holding up a marker to your computer's camera and activating a special piece of Flash software. As you can see in this video, I'm holding up a piece of paper with the designated marker (in this case a broken heart), and the video of John Mayer follows it around the screen, and even tilts in 3D space! The FLAR technology was featured in WIRED Magazine, and you can check out their video as well. You can try out John Mayer's Augmented Reality video for yourself at www.johnmayer.com. Studio B Films is a video production company based in the San Francisco Bay Area specializing in documentary, sales and marketing sizzle videos, customer stories, motion graphics, corporate communications, green screen shooting, and creative video editing.

As part of our exploration into the potential benefits of using AR for maintenance and repair, we designed, implemented, and user tested a prototype augmented reality application to support military mechanics conducting routine maintenance tasks inside an armored vehicle turret. Our prototype uses a tracked head-worn display to augment a mechanics natural view with text, labels, arrows, and animated sequences designed to facilitate task comprehension, location, and execution. A within-subject controlled user study examined professional military mechanics using our system to complete 18 common tasks under field conditions. These tasks included installing and removing fasteners and indicator lights, and connecting cables, all within the cramped interior of an armored personnel carrier turret. An augmented reality condition was tested against two baseline conditions: an untracked head-worn display with text and graphics and a fixed flat panel display representing an improved version of the laptop-based documentation currently employed in practice. The augmented reality condition allowed mechanics to locate tasks more quickly than when using either baseline, and in some instances, resulted in less overall head movement. A qualitative survey showed mechanics found the augmented reality condition intuitive and satisfying for the tested sequence of tasks.
