"Landscape After Battle" (1970; Krajobraz Po Bitwie) is a haunting and memorable film directed by Andrzej Wajda that takes place just after World War II. The film is based on several short stories written by Tadeusz Borowski, who survived Auschwitz. The film begins with the Americans entering a concentration camp at the end of the war in 1945, freeing the prisoners. However, they are freed from one camp and placed into another -- this time guarded by the Americans deep inside Germany. Fearing the people held inside the Nazi camps would know no sense of law, the authorities caged them in another prison until they could decide what to do with them. Tadeusz (played by Daniel Olbrychski) is an intellectual man who sorts through rubbish to find books to read and writes poetry. He befriends a Jewish woman named Nina in the new camp who fled Poland after the war. After talking, they decide to leave the camp to go for a walk in the woods. Once outside the camp, the two share their feelings and becomes physically intimate. Nina tells Tadeusz she would rather be anywhere, except for Poland. Tadeusz, after thinking long, decides Poland is his home and should return there. Both decide that they should reenter the camp for a while, but doing so creates a dramatic turn of events neither expected. Bryanjenkins's travel blog entry: "Today, Max, Jeronimo, and I payed a visit to 798 Art District. Formerly a factory, this complex now houses the homes, studios, workshops, and galleries of China's cutting edge artists. Some was almost indistinguishable from similar western avant-garde art. Some was beautiful. Some was ugly. And a few galleries aimed at revealing something truly beatiful and distinct about the culture, atmosphere, and turbulence in the modern era, and I ate it up. I guess, overall it was like any day spent perusing modern art. First we visited the 798 museum, a very well-done retrospective on the development of the post-Open Door Chinese art scene. The space, having once been a warehouse, was perfect for housing some VERY large installations. Most memorable was the entrance, a 30 m long windy wunnel filled with a few hundreds TVs playing a wide variety of TV channels. Of course when I was there, they were mostly Olympics. One other gallery I'll mention specifically is the 798 photo gallery. Apparently one the oldest galleries there, they have a long tradition of presenting both beautiful and thought-provoking photography of China. The film explores the obsession Adolf Hitler had with his own particular vision of what was and was not aesthetically acceptable and how he applied these notions while running the Third Reich. His obsession with art he considered pure, in opposition to the supposedly degenerate avant-garde works by Jewish and Soviet artists, reveals itself to be deeply connected to Hitler's equally subjective and strict ideal of physical beauty and health. Hitler is shown as an amateur architect who spends a lot of time planning designs of new buildings for the Reich and acquiring paintings and sculptures that reinforce his vision. At one point in the film, Cohen questions Hitler's grasp of reality. Terrific new release from the great Brian Culbertson. "XII" is the cd and on this one Brian teams up with Earl Klugh for a tune called 'That's Life". Brian Culbertson (born January 12, 1973) is a smooth jazz musician and instrumentalist from Decatur, Illinois, United States. Son of jazz band director and trumpeter Jim Culbertson, Brian's instruments include the keyboard and trombone. Heavily influenced by funk, much of Culbertson's material is funk-based instrumental, but he has begun calling upon vocalists such as Trey Lorenz, Marc Nelson and Kenny Lattimore to add to his later pieces. Culbertson has released eleven albums so far. The first three were on the Blue Moon label: "Long Night Out" 1994, "Modern Life" 1995, and "After Hours" 1996. After moving to the Atlantic Records, three more albums followed: "Secrets" 1997, "Somethin' Bout Love" 1999, and the critically acclaimed "Nice & Slow" 2001. "Come on Up" 2003 was released on Warner Jazz, and Culbertson then moved to GRP Records for his project, "It's On Tonight" 2005 which debuted at #1 on Billboard Magazine's contemporary-jazz charts, just to name a few. His twelfth album titled XII, is set to be released on July 20,2010.

Mr. Bungle was an experimental rock/avant-garde metal group from Northern California. The band was formed in 1985 while the members were still in high school and was named after a children's educational film. Mr. Bungle released four demo tapes in the mid to late 1980s before being signed to Warner Bros. Records and releasing three full-length studio albums between 1991 and 1999. The band toured in 2000 to support their last album but in 2004 they disbanded. Although Mr. Bungle went through several line up changes early in their career, the longest serving members were vocalist Mike Patton, guitarist Trey Spruance, bassist Trevor Dunn, drummer Danny Heifetz, and Clinton "Bär" McKinnon on saxophone and woodwinds. Mr. Bungle was known for its distinctive musical traits, often cycling through several musical genres within the course of a single song. Many of its songs had an unconventional structure and utilized a wide array of instruments and samples. Live shows often featured members dressing up and an array of cover songs. Rex Rideout commandeered my video camera and started filming me while I was recording piano on "Skies Wide Open" (the track with Avant on vocals). He caught me ;) By the way, all the blankets surrounding me are there in order to get the 'deadest' possible sound out of the piano. Even though my recording room is fairly small, it still has a 'room' sound so I try to eliminate that as much as possible when doing my piano tracks so we can add the perfect 'ambience' in the mix. We start mixing this song tomorrow!!!
