KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A baby born prematurely in a McDonald's restroom Monday was recovering at a Kansas City hospital Wednesday and was expected to survive. The boy, born at about 32 weeks gestation, was in stable condition. The newborn's 20-year-old mother gave birth on the toilet at her workplace and tried three times to flush the baby, police said. As of Tuesday, police hadn't yet been able to speak to the mother -- because she was receiving medical treatment -- and prosecutors hadn't filed any charges in the case by late Tuesday. The woman was working at the drive-through window and appeared to be in pain when she went to the restroom. After 15 minutes, an employee went to the restroom to check on the woman and immediately called 911. The child was still in the toilet and wasn't breathing when paramedics arrived, police said. They revived the baby and took him to one hospital and his mother to another. "The mother told paramedics that she didn't know she was pregnant," said Capt. Rich Lockhart, of the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department. It was not clear whether the woman had other children, he said. John Jelinek, who owns and operates the McDonald's restaurant, said he was "truly shocked by the unfortunate incident." "The safety and well-being of my customers and employees is always my top priority," Jelinek said in a written statement Tuesday afternoon. History of McDonalds More than 100 billion served, and still counting. Hi, I'm Veronica Hill with California Travel Tips on the site of the original McDonalds Restaurant in San Bernardino. Though Richard and Maurice McDonald opened a popular barbecue joint here in 1940, they soon realized that hamburgers and French fries were a better bet. (The original McDonalds menu included barbecued beef, tamales and baked beans, and all meals were served with a side of French Fries.) McDonalds history was made on Dec. 12, 1948, when Richard and Maurice transformed their barbecue joint into the first McDonalds restaurant, focusing on speed, value and high volume. Back then, a burger would set you back 15 cents. A side of Fries? A dime. And all delivered in about 60 seconds flat, creating America's first "Fast Food." In 1954, the McDonald brothers met milkshake salesman Ray Kroc, who bought the ninth franchise of their restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois. Business went well, and Kroc bought out the brothers in 1961 for $2.7 million. The oldest surviving McDonalds is located in Downey, California. It was the fourth location, opened on August 18, 1953. Today, travelers along the Route 66 corridor can see where it all started at the McDonald's Museum located on the historic site of the original McDonalds.
