Rajiv Gandhi (Bandra-Worli) Sea Link Project has been one of the most highly recommended project of all the transport studies done for the metropolitan region during the last forty years. At present, Mahim causeway is the only link connecting western suburbs to island city of Mumbai. The existing north south western corridor is highly congested and during the peak hours results in a bottleneck at Mahim Causeway. Vehicular traffic admeasuring about 1,20000 PCU travels on the Mahim causeway everyday and during peak hours and it takes about forty minutes to travel from Mahim causeway to Worli, a distance of about 8 km.

Unlike the last accident on BWSL which claimed a schoolboy in a Skoda Fabia and the passenger in a Wagon R taxi in December, 2009, the CCTVs on BWSL were functional and have become a proof as well as part of study on why there are accidents on BWSL. RP Khot, senior police inspector, Worli traffic police said, We have speed guns. We have also installed ramblers for reducing the speed on the BWSL. This is a video of a to and fro drive over the much awaited Bandra -Worli Sea Link on Saturday, 26 July 09. Though the date 26 July has not exactly been very good for Mumbai, in the last few years, but this particular Saturday was cool. It was partly sunny afternoon, no rains at all. The traffic was less and the drive super smooth. I have added the music of Bappi Lahiri and Vishal Bharadwaj for that unique Mumbai Flavour. Unveiling of a new Landmark in Mumbai City Till today, Mumbais landmark monuments were either the Gateway of India or Marine Drive. Both are the relics of a time gone by, none from the post-independence era. Now, finally Mumbai has a structure that we can be proud of the Bandra Worli Sealink. The sea link will of course ease the movement of traffic between Bandra and Worli, but it is also a thing of beauty, an engineering marvel. Built by HCC, Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) project was conceived few decades ago and came to life on June 30,2009 when United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the gleaming new bridge. She became the first person to go up and down the BWSL in her motorcade. The 5.6-km bridge on the Arabian Sea hopes that some 150000 vehicles will use it each day. Those present at the inauguration included Ajit Gulabchand, CMD, HCC, Chief Minister Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, central Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, central Minister of Agriculture Sharad Pawar and Heavy Industries Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
