I'm proud of every one way from back in 2001 when we started as the redliners, 2003 when we all got tickets on that road trip, and 04, and 05... to 2007 when we were on the cusp of greatness. Even the current members who still are here gearing up for the season after enduring the maelstrom that nearly ended the group, again! As we get older and wiser we are acquiring our dream cars, faster, more nimble impliments of war if you will. But we cannot forgot where we came from and what we started with. Thank you for downloading the first ShopSavvy version for iPhone version 1.0. Our current release was sent to 100 beta testers, many of whom provided VERY detailed feedback that made it clear that our barcode scanning feature could use improvement. First, we didnt provide any sort of scanning hints ie guides, arrows or pointers. Second, our scanning technology supports both legacy non-AF camera such as the ones found on the G2 and G3 as well as the newer AF camera found on the 3GS. We are going to submit a new version on Tuesday that should help resolve many of the scanning issues by including scanning hints and a different library for the AF cameras found on 3GS. In the meantime, I figured it might be smart to explain how to scan a barcode using ShopSavvy Version 1.0: * Light. The most important thing is to scan in a well lit area. Most of the time we find that scanning problems are related to low light. Make sure there is plenty of light. * Hold it Still. Try not to shake. Try to hold at least one of the items perfectly still. This is especially true on the 3GS because you need focus to scan. (the update should reduce this problem because it will be 90% faster) * Glare. Of course in well lit areas there is often glare caused by bright overhead lights. This is especially true on high gloss items. Make sure the glare is not over the black lines of the barcode. * Shadows. Just as glare hides the barcode from our view, shadows can prevent ShopSavvy from scanning your ...

Google today is celebrating the 57th anniversary of the barcode by using a barcode as their logo for the day, so I got my Nokia N95 and scanned it and I got the number "1 4401403" Now I'm pretty sure that this is a wrong data as I got random numbers everytime, So if you got a mobile device with barcode scanner or a barcode scanner it self, scan the logo and comment your result. This is a "Phase II" model 994 Delivery Bar Code Sorter (DBCS) used by the United States Postal Service throughout the United States. This is their most basic sorting device as it takes mail that has already received a bar code and gives it a greater depth of sort - right down to your letter carrier on his or her delivery route. At the time of this recording there were nearly 600 sites using various phases and versions of the DBCS - my guess is there were easily a few thousand of these machines in use before the Postal Service started to downsize in the late 2000s. Each machine averaged about 30000 pieces of mail per hour (depending on the length and thickness of the individual mail pieces), thus requiring a hefty amount of preventive maintenance each day. In this case the technician has placed a "test deck" in the machine's feeder to ensure accuracy of sortation and other adjustments. Normally, during the middle of the night, when most of the sortation takes place, there would hundreds of feet of "real" mail to run through the machine during a regular shift. Also at the time of this recording the Postal Service was using a "Phase 6" model that was the newest design but still looked pretty much like the 15-year-old phase II you see in this video. Also, this particular machine was manufactured by ElectroCom Automation but the Postal Service purchased similar equipment from Siemens, Pitney Bowes, and other manufactures at different times from the early 80s through the 2000s ...

People, for better or worse, have always been a little touchy about unique identifiers. Social security numbers. Barcodes. RFID. GUIDs. In this day and age of massive registration databases, of drive-by identity theft, a number can be a very powerful thing. You may remember the sound and fury over the Pentium III processor's embedded serial number, a feature which could have been used (potentially) to track a user's computer without the user's knowledge or consent. This was back in 1999—ancient history—but it was taken quite seriously at the time. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission was asked, repeatedly, to investigate the technology as an unfair and deceptive trade practice. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, an advisory group to the European Parliament came very close to recommending a complete European ban of the chip. Imagine, if you will, that your computer has been branded with a unique identifier, very similar to the one introduced with the Pentium III.
