The original Babes in Toyland, by Victor Herbert, was a long and lavish spectacle, with two heroes and two heroines. The Comic Opera Guild condensed the show to a more practical plotline and the dialog was rewritten by Thomas Petiet. The orchestration was reduced to keyboard and wind quintet, for performances in schools and small venues. Although aimed at young audiences, the show is amusing enough for adults to enjoy. This performance is from the Comic Opera Guilds 2004 production. The children of Mother Goose Land welcome the arrival of Mary-Mary, Quite Contrary (Sara Emerson) because she entertains them with stories. Today she decides to tell them what life would be like if she were on the stage. As was customary at the time, Victor Herbert often interpolated songs from other shows. The Guild has done this for this version, substituting Kiss Me Again from Mademoiselle Modiste for the original song. Barney oflynn, a standard Irish number.
