  全長15センチほどの深海魚デメニギス（学名：Macropinna microstoma）。 緑色の球状部分が円筒形の高感度の眼で、戦闘機のコックピットを思わせる頭部から真上 に飛び出ている 。 通常の眼の位置にあるのは鼻に相当する器官だ。。 アメリカのモントレー湾水族館研究所（MBARI）が、カリフォルニア州中央沿岸部沖 の深海で生きたデメニギスを発見した。 その軟らかく透明な半球状の眼球が無傷のまま見つかったのは同種では初となる。 1939年以降、デメニギスの存在は確認されていたが、引き揚げられる途中で魚網に絡 んで傷だらけになってしまうのが常だった。

At depths of 600 to 800 meters (2,000 to 2,600 feet) below the surface, the ROV cameras typically showed these fish hanging motionless in the water, their eyes glowing a vivid green in the ROV's bright lights. The ROV video also revealed a previously undescribed feature of these fish--its eyes are surrounded by a transparent, fluid-filled shield that covers the top of the fish's head.
