Hey BP Friends! It's time for another update video! This is at week 61, or 1 year & 2 months into my recovery. My BP eye still twitches quite a bit and the synkinesis is still very noticeable to me, but most people (including my doctors) think that I am improving... some even go as far as to say I'm 100% recovered. Who am I to point out my residuals to non BP sufferers? ;) If they want to think I'm 100% recovered, I say LET THEM! It makes me feel good that my face isn't receiving the opposite reaction: "Oh, too bad you haven't recovered completely!" PS... If someone says that to you, you have my permission to punch them in the mouth and ask them "Now you know how I feel! Has the paralysis kicked in yet?" JERKS! Don't play that game! I woke up with Bell's Palsy yesterday, October 1, 2010. I had been having a headache, ear ache, fatique, then numbness in my tongue followed quickly by the loss of taste sensation. We do not know the cause yet. It could be Lyme disease, which I had blood drawn and it was sent off to a lab in Boston. It may also be a latent viral infection most likely from the chicken pox virus. The problem is that I have facial paralysis on the right side of my face. I am taking Amoxicillin, Prednisone, Valacyclovir, and an eye lubricant at night. The most irritating thing, right now, is that I can't blink my right eye.

Facial Surgery for Bells Palsy. The role of surgery as a therapy for Bell's palsy is controversial. If patients do not completely recover, surgical treatment may be indicated. These complex procedures are performed on the facial nerves and muscles in order to reduce distortion of facial features and help restore function (eg, eye closure). The three main procedures are (1) facial nerve repair and nerve graft, (2) nerve substitution, and (3) muscle transposition. These procedures are not able to completely restore normal function, but they can significantly improve facial function and appearance. (1). Facial nerve repair is the most effective procedure to restore facial function in patients who have suffered nerve damage from an accident or during surgery. It involves microscopic repair of a nerve that has been cut. A nerve graft replaces one that has been removed. (2). Nerve substitution is indicated when the nerve cannot be repaired in the conventional manner. In this procedure, another cranial nerve involved in facial movement is connected to the damaged nerve and takes over its function. (3). Turns out, now I have the chicken pox (a mild outbreak, localized to my chin, neck and upper back) so I've started taking Famciclvoir (the same anti-viral given for shingles, which is I guess what I have now!) So... it's true that you CAN get the chicken pox twice! The second time you catch the "Wild strain"! Lucky us!!!
