Pint lids now have a life of their own. Ben & Jerry's has scooped its newest creation, Moo Vision, an augmented reality experience for iPhone users. This application represents two first-ever milestones -- Moo Vision doesn't require a webcam and utilizes marker technology without using an actual marker AND there is no QR code or a specially designed graphic required on the packaging. Moo Vision is as unique as the big chunks and swirls Ben & Jerry's puts in their ice cream. The application reads and recognizes different pints without requiring them to be physically modified. It shows in a fun, new way "It's What's Inside That Counts" and lets fans take advantage of this breakthrough technology from wherever they are enjoying their pint. Currently, Moo Vision recognizes four of Ben & Jerry's most popular pints, New York Super Fudge Chunk, Cherry Garcia, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Milk & Cookies and the company plans to add more flavors to the mix. Moo Vision is available through the Ben & Jerry's Happiness iPhone application.

ICE cream giant Ben & Jerry's waste up to ONE MILLION LITRES of water A DAY because staff worldwide are told to run taps non-stop to wash scoops. The firm - whose green ethics are central to its environmentally-friendly image - has a global policy of using controversial 'dipping wells'. It claims that health and safety rules dictate scoops must be placed in these sinks under constantly-flowing water to stop bacterial growth. But that means - as the average dipping well wastes three litres of water a minute - just one Ben & Jerry's store with a tap running for eight hours could waste up to 1440 litres. Around the world, in 782 stores - in 25 countries - that's 1126080 litres, which is the daily requirement of the town of Totnes in Devon or the daily water needs of 250000 people in Mozambique.
