Addis Ababa — Ethiopia played out a goalless draw against visiting Benin in the first leg of the first round qualifier of the Orange 2013 Africa Cup of Nation match played in Addis Ababa on Wednesday. Benin frustrated the Ethiopian side with some solid defensive play but ten minutes in to the first half, the Ethiopian striker Omod Okwury could have opened the scoring only to fluff the opportunity. The hosts had more of the play and came close again after creating another chance but Getaneh Kebede's strike went wide. Kebede did beat the Benin keeper Fabien Farnolle but the striker fell down before slotting the ball home much to the disbelief of the home crowd. Meanwhile Benin coach Manuel Amoros expressed delight at the result. "I am very happy with the result. The Ethiopian players were good in played some neat short passes creating scoring opportunities. But they were not able to penetrate our solid defensive play," he said. He added that he is hopeful to beat the Ethiopian side in the return leg. As for the Ethiopian head coach Sewnet Bishaw it was never in doubt who dominated possession but he was disappointed his side could not convert the created chances. When the coach brought in Adane Girma, the scorer of the winning lone goal for St. George Club against the Gabonese side AS Mangasport some 12 days ago in the Orange CAF Confederation cup there were hopes for goals but it wasn't to be. "I did what I could. It was not our day. We had plenty of scoring opportunities ...
Ethiopia to face Benin in 2013 Africa football Cup of Nations Qualifier at Addis Ababa Stadium. Without the presence of twelve of its best squad members "Walia" Ethiopian national senior soccer side encounters its Benin counterpart for 2013 Cup of nations' first leg qualification match on Wednesday. Head Coach Swenet Bishaw told reporters his side is capable of finishing business at home despite his shortage of great talent. Thanks to CAF's chaotic international schedule three international matches take place in five days thus players from the premier league defending champion Ethiopian Coffee and cup holder Saint George are not available for Wednesday's first leg match in Addis Ababa. Twenty six players the majority from Dedebit and Mugher Cement each throwing in six players had been at a two week camp preparation. Taking Ethiopian Football's federation lenient stand in to consideration the assumption appears that Benin, nowhere in world soccer map and sitting 137th in FIFA's latest ranking could never achieve the impossible how so ever football is the most unpredictable sport in planet earth. "Do clubs come before the national side?" many including those with no idea of football are in question.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says erosion and flood problems in Benin City will soon be a thing of the past with the completion of the storm water project. The Governor stated this yesterday during an inspection of work on the 13 ft deep channel being constructed on the New Lagos road to link the canal o the Five Junction to the canal on the Traditional Ground. According to Oshiomhole, " I am satisfied with the on-going construction. It is good work. We have to re-claim the moat to enable us construct a canal here to serve as a receptacle for erosion coming from different points". While assuring the people of the state of government's resolve to tackle erosion problems in the state, he urged the construction firm to speed up the work. In his remark, the State Commissioner for Works, Mr. Francis Evbuomwan explained that what is being done is the filling and compaction of the canal of the canal and when it is completed, it will act as a receptacle for flood water from different areas. " The flood water coming from Uselu is transmitted to Ikpoba River. It is about four meters deep and twenty -- five meters wide", he said. Some residents of the area commended the Governor for coming to their aid to deflood the area. They lamented that past governments in the area had continuously ignored their plea which had made many of them to vacate the area.

Audio from BBC Radio 4 "A History of the World in 100 Objects - Benin plaque: the oba with Europeans" Benin plaque: the oba with Europeans (cast in the sixteenth century). Brass; from Nigeria The kingdom of Benin This plaque is one of the relief brass-cast plaques that once used to decorate the palace of the oba (king) in Benin City, the capital of the Benin (Edo) kingdom (in modern southern Nigeria). The palace complex was set up around atrium courtyards. Some had galleries with wooden pillars supporting the roofwith brass-cast plaques fixed to them. During the British Expedition of 1897 around 900 plaques were found. The plaques are cast in the lost-wax technique, with relief images. Some of them celebrate successful wars or historical events, while others are a vivid depiction of Benin court life and ritual in the 1500s. The plaques date to the 1500s and 1600s. That period is known as the time of the warrior-kings and is considered to be the golden age of the Benin Kingdom. It was a time of growth and consolidation under famous rulers such as Oba Esigie (about 1504-1550). They expanded the kingdom and made it a leading military, political, and economic power in the Guinea Gulf. At its peak its influence expanded over a vast territory around the Niger River Delta. In that period Benin achieved great prosperity through military conquests and trade. The first contacts between Benin and Europe took place with the Portuguese in the late 1400s, leading to intensive trade ...
GUOSA LANGUAGE - THE UNITY IN ECOWAS The lack of a common language in independent Nigeria and other West African regional countries or the ECOWAS has given rooms to the socio-economic and political backwardness of the sub-region. It brought about the absence of cohesion and unity among the people.Language is a means by which words or expressions find meaning and put into use. Essentially, language is a building bridge and a tool for conveying information, thoughts, skills, ideas, and reasoning, and ensures receipt of it from varied sources. The absence of a common language can only mean that people are unable to share ideas, thoughts, skills, ideas, and reasoning. The need for an indigenously evolved lingua franca for the people in the West Africa sub-region cannot, therefore, be over emphasized. There are about 400 different ethnic languages, and dialects in Nigeria and about twice this number in other West African countries. The Guosa Language evolved from at least 120 of these languages and dialects. It is my vision that, as a common unifying language, Guosa will be fully developed into a linguistic and trans-cultural vehicle of communication and identity of the West African Regional Countries of Africa or the ECOWAS. The Language, therefore, will not only unite the people, but also contribute substantially to the socio-economic, political and industrial revolution of Africa and the black communities all over the world. Let's remember you for some good works in ...
di Fabio e Patty World Voodoo Festival On January 10th in Ouidah, Benin (West Africa), the World Voodoo Festival takes place. This is the most important gathering and public exposure of the Voodoo religion. It is a unique occasion to approach Voodoo, a religion whose practices are generally secret otherwise. A grand feast takes place at the beach. Several traditional dancers exhibit themselves in front of of tribal kings and courts coming from several West African countries. Sacrifices are made on the shore, that are related to the slave trade that took place from this coast to the Americas from 1500 until mid 1800. During the nights preceding the Voodoo festival, electricity is cut in Ouidah during the night. In the night, the Woros dance naked in the streets of the town, playing music with traditional instruments. The Woros are young men initiated to Voodoo. It is forbidden, and not recommended to watch them, particularly for women. However, it is possible to submit oneself to a Voodoo initiation in the days preceding the festival, and to become a Woro. for to rent rooms and visite: www.maisondelajoie.com
