"Bewitched," the television comedy starring Dick York and Elizabeth Montgomery as Darrin and Samantha Stevens, man and witch - er, wife, premiered in 1964. The theme song was written by Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller. Greenfield had written a number of successful songs with Neil Sedaka. Keller later recalled, "The pilot had used Frank Sinatra's 'Witchcraft,' but they didn't want to pay for 'Witchcraft,' so they asked us to write something. We only had a week to write the song, do the demo, and get it out to California, and they accepted it and they put it on." But when the show aired the following season, an instrumental version of the song was used with music provided by Warren Baker who composed music for the series. Steve Lawrence recorded the song and it was used for the flip-side of his 1964 single "I Will Wait For You." As far as I've been able to determine, it was never released on any album. In 2005 when the movie starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrel premiered, the song was included on the soundtrack, 41 years after it had been written. For this video, I used video excerpts from the pilot episode of "Bewitched" along with photographs of Elizabeth Montgomery. Watching Ms. Montgomery and looking at the photographs, I have to say that she was one of most beautiful television actresses in the past 40 years. She is greatly missed! "The Bewitched Collector Favorites" begins with 6th season episode #192, "Serena Stops the Show", original airdate February 19, 1970. Serena is appointed Entertainment Chairman and wants guest stars Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart to sing her song at the annual Cosmos Cotillion. When their Manager tells her they are booked every Saturday night until "1976", she casts a spell to make them so unpopular they'll be desperate to sing anywhere!! Episode Trivia: This is the first episode with the part of Serena credited as being played by "Pandora Spocks". This opening was used in reruns from the late 60s through 1992. When Columbia remastered all the episodes in 1992, they replaced this music with the season one version. Unfortunately this is my favorite version of the opening theme song and it is no longer in use today. You can only hear it when listening to the end credits of a season three episode. Recorded from WGN in 1991 from the episode "No Zip In My Zap".
